Pasting in content from another post. ~ OB

I have been having some computer issues, with something constantly running in the background which is causing my computer to lag severely. I opened task manager in order to close some of the items I already knew about, and discovered that mshta.exe was running multiple versions of itself (along with some other applications). I'm currently running Windows XP home version 2002 service pack 3, on a Lenovo ThinkCentre (built by IBM); Celeron CPU 2.80GHz; 2.99GB RAM. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me with this, as I'm not sure how to verify the legitimate programs from the ad/spy/malware ones. Also, I know there was another post about the same type of problem, but when I went back to try and post there, I couldn't find it at all, which is the only reason I started a new topic.
Here are the screen shots I took of the task manager in case it helps:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Please run Combofix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Here is the Combofix Log. What was on my machine, how can I tell it was infected and how do I prevent it from happening again? Thanks.

Well, a number of malware has been found but the main one is TDSS, a rootkit, which leaves behind the At<<number>>.job files you see being deleted by Combofix.

Prevention we will cover at the end.

I want to check the bak files so please run this program next

Click HERE to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
You will be presented with a Menu.
Type 1, then press Enter.
FindAWF tool will begin scanning.
It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
When the scan is finished, a text file in notepad called AWF.txt will automatically open.
Return to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

Please run TDSSKiller next

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Looking good here. :thumbup2:

Run the ESET online scanner now

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Leave the top box checked and then check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

How's the PC acting during this?

Better than it was before, although it still has some issues. How do I prevent it from getting infected again?

I don't know if they are part of the same problem or not. It lags, but a large part of that could be from not enough free space. A lot of times, I'll go to switch pages, and I'll click on wherever I'm trying to navigate to, and have to hit the refresh button to get the page to change...that, or close the page completely and reload it. MsMpEng.exe will pop up and start running...when it's already running. I sometimes have 3 or 4 of those running at once, and they really mess with whatever I'm trying to do. Like I said tho, I'm not sure those are related.
