I'm running Windows XP and I have some issues with my system with popups and redirection. I was attempting to run the HijackThis app but I get an error message before it scans....Part of the message says.....

"For some reason your system denied write access to the host file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may not be able to fix this."

After I click "okay" the scan starts. I saw some things that I thought needed to be deleted but after I select the items and click "repair" and run the scan again...the files are still there. I've uninstalled and re-installed the HijackThis app but that didn't help. I've also attached my log, I'd appreciate it if someone could look at it and recommend what I need to remove once I get the app to run correctly.

Hi,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

This *wont* fix the error related with your hostfile *yet*, we will deal with that afterwards. I want to make sure first that your system is clean (apart from your modified hostfile).

Hi,

* Download: HostsXpert
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert
Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore MS Hosts file' and click OK.

*In case you get an error there, do the following..

Open Malwarebytes > More Tools tab > Fileassasin > Click Run Tool
Then an explorer Window will open.
Copy and paste next in the field under file name:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then Click open next to it.

You should see this image:

Posted Image

Click yes there.

FileAssassin will then delete the hosts file.

To recreate it again (default hosts file), start Hostxpert again.
It will give a warning that the hosts file doesn't exist and Press OK to create hosts file.
Click OK there.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Much better...Thanks! That cleared up the host issues and the HijackThis apps runs fine too. Are there any other issues in the HijackThis log that need attention or does everything else look good?

Hi,

Yes, everything looks good here, however, I suggest you uninstall the Ask.com toolbar since this one is not recommended.
