Running windows XP pro. I have had multiple problems over the last year. Antimalwaredoctor got me somehow, but I believe I removed it. Since then, I switched from AVIRA to AVG, and now AVG is giving me constant warnings about trojans in winlogon and explorer.exe. At logon I get an error message: "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnpwbcf.dll The specified module could not be found" My computer is impossibly slow and I occasionally get google redirects. Ran DDS, but Gmer freezes my computer every time; need to hard restart afterwards. I ran a trojan remover from simply super software, which got me back my windows firewall and updates, which had been down for weeks. Since then, I have lost the ability to download .exe files using firefox. Either the download cancels, or the file is empty. Basically everything is terrible. Any help is very much appreciated. Log below:

  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

The problems are still not resolved, but they also have not gotten any worse. The system is now so slow that it's not worth trying to use it until I can get it cleaned up, so it's been pretty dormant. I can post a new DDS log tonight sometime, however the machine has only been turned on once since the log already posted, so it should be very current. I have already run defogger, and I don't believe I ever had any CD emulators on this machine. GMER Freezes the system every time I run it; I did notice once that it froze while scanning C:\WINDOWS, so I can't obtain any GMER info right now. Haven't seen the search redirects in a while, but that's probably because I haven't been using it much.

Hello Thomper,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Please download MBRCheck to your desktop.

1. Double click MBRCheck.exe to run it (Right click and run as Administrator for Vista).
2. It will open a black window, please do not fix anything (if it gives you an option).
3. Exit that window and it will produce a log (MBRCheck_date_time).
4. Please post that log when you reply.

Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

Please download exeHelper to your desktop. Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix. A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed. Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Download and Rename Combofix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it 1234.scr before saving it to your desktop.

  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on 1234.scr & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

Thanks for the help, here comes the drama:

As I stated, I can't download files to the desktop in question. I got around this by downloading to a laptop and transferring the files via USB stick. To keep life simple, I put the files in a new directory on the desktop and tried to run them from there. Not sure if this was a problem, I realized afterwards that the instructions said to run them from the desktop.

So, I tried to run Rootkit Unhooker from the exe file, and my computer locked while the 'please wait a few moments' loading bar was on the screen. I waited about 35-40 minutes and this hadn't moved, and I couldn't click on my desktop icons etc. SO I hit the 'restart' button. This didn't work. The boot got to the windows XP loading screen, flashed a bluescreen of death too quick to read anything, and the system restarted. This loaded up the 'windows did not start successfully' screen. It gives the usual options: various safe-modes, last known good config, and start windows normally. Choosing any of these options gets back to the bluescreen flash and restarts the boot. eff.

Ok, looks like it's restarting windows now. I left the USB key in while re-starting, which seems to have been the issue. With it out, windows is starting, slowly. I will try to run the above programs again.

The issue is as follows: I tried to run combofix, but it tells me I have to uninstall AVG. I tried to uninstall AVG, but it gives me an error message when I do that, and then won't let me complete the uninstall. Stalemate. On the bright side, computer seems to be doing better, faster etc. I will try to uninstall AVG some more, if you know of anything to help with this please let me know.

Thanks a lot for your help, it really is appreciated.

AVG was uninstalled using an uninstaller tool from their website. Combofix ran, and did a bunch of 'stuff'. Log follows; please advise on next actions.

Installed avira, because I was nervous about not having any system protection. It gave me a warning about the same files as before: explorer and winlogon. Other problems seem ok; can download .exe files in firefox no problem, and system seems faster for sure. Still get the error message about the missing file on startup, and I just got a windows message saying it needed me to put in a service pack 3 cd to restore some files (explorer and winlogon maybe?). I hit cancel, as I thought I should wait for your input before going forward.

Do you have a Windows Xp instalation disk?

Ask Toolbar is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know as stated in the following Articles:

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Ask Toolbar or Generic Ask Toolbar.

We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

c:\documents and settings\Thombert\Application Data\SystemProc\lsass.exe

Handler: avgsecuritytoolbar - {F2DDE6B2-9684-4A55-86D4-E255E237B77C} -

"Bluetooth Connection Assistant"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

The machine will no longer open windows. Gets to the windows loading screen, waits for what seems to be full loading time, and then goes to a black screen, which restarts the computer. The optical drive is empty and I don't have any USB drives in. Do I need to run the recovery console? If so, what do I do when I get there? I may have a windows XP disk somewhere, but I couldn't lay my hands on it without a pretty big search.

Can you get into windows in safe mode?

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.

Also please look for the Windows XP disk
Did you run The CFscript from my previous reply before it started not booting?

Can't boot into safe mode. Failure is different; safe mode takes it to a brief blue-screen of death flash before restarting; regular boot goes to a plain black screen.

I did not have a chance to run the script. Since the machine in question is so slow, I've been using my laptop to check the forums etc. I was starting the computer up to run the script as reqested when it went into this spiral.

I will look for the XP disk. What do I do when I find it?

Thanks again; glad to have someone willing to help me with this.

EDIT: Disabled the automatic reboot on system failure; got the bluescreen to stick around. It says the following:

STOP: c000021a {fatal system error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Let me know if you find a or have a Windows Xp disk. Make sure your USB is not connected to the machine this may be causing it not to reboot if its connected. Do the Following below if you cant get the machine to boot.

1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press Enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

If you are asked to confirm, do so.
6. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

Windows will now begin loading. Please re-run MBRCheck.exe and post me the new log.

Now see if your machine will reboot.
