Hi. I have some sort of browser redirect malware, and made some basic attempts to remove it (MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, Symantec Endpoint Protection), and while the redirect issue seems to have gone away, my browsers are no longer behaving properly. I'm on Windows 7 64bit, and both IE and FireFox processes will hang at startup about 7/10 of the time. No browser window ever appears, and the browser process just sits inactive taking up a small amount of memory. I have to manually kill the process and try again. Also tried Chrome and it crashes very frequently when visiting a link - don't know if it's related to the same problem. Only IE 64bit version doesn't seem to be affected, but I can't set it as my default browser.

I uninstalled IE, rebooted and reinstalled it, but that didn't fix the problem. A full scan of Anti-Malware doesn't detect any issues. I also tried going back to the earliest system restore point I had, which was before I was getting the redirects, but that didn't fix the problem. I've googled but am not turning up anything useful, so I thought I'd seek help from here.

Note that no GMER log is attached because it came back saying that no system modifications were detected, and so there's no content in the log.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
DDS.scr
DDS.pif
Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results.
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a log from the RKUnhooker anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Scan With RKUnHooker

Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** You may get this warning:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Just ignore it and continue. :thumbup2:

Best Regards,

Thanks for offering to look into this. The same problems are still happening, so any help is appreciated. Below is the updated DDS log. I tried the Rootkit Unhooker URL (http://www.rootkit.com/vault/DiabloNova/RKUnhookerLE.EXE) but it appears to be invalid as I get a Zero Sized Reply from it.

Hello Puzzleboy, :)

I tried the Rootkit Unhooker URL (http://www.rootkit.com/vault/DiabloNova/RKUnhookerLE.EXE) but it appears to be invalid as I get a Zero Sized Reply from it.

Try this link instead: Rootkit Unhooker

Best Regards,

Thanks. That linked worked, and I installed it, but when I try to run it it says "Error loading driver, NTSTATUS code: 0xC000036B". Is it supposed to work on Win7 64-bit? Perhaps that's the issue.

Welcome to BC :)

Sorry for the delay

  • Download TDSSKiller.zip and extract TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop
  • Execute TDSSKiller.exe by doubleclicking on it.
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected (it should be by default)
  • Click Continue then click Reboot now
  • Once complete, a log will be produced at the root drive which is typically C:\

    For example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_24.07.2010_13.10.52_log.txt
  • Attach that log, please.

Yea, it did find something (Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.tdl4), and it cleaned it. See attached log. And now my browsers appear to be behaving properly. I'll keep a close eye on them for the next several days.

Thanks so much for identifying the problem! Hopefully that's the only issue.

Great. Browsers are working fine and original hanging problem is gone. No signs of any redirects or popups. I'm thinking it is fixed.

Big thanks for finding the problem! I really appreciate it.
