I am using Windows XP on a Dell Latitude D620 with Google Chrome browser
Browsing the internet I stumbled upon filestube.com, and this is when my trouble started.
I started getting pop up bubbles from my system tray from "XP Antispyware 2011" saying my computer is at risk etc. Then soon after I was getting full pop ups for this "XP antispyware 2011" I can x out of them but they do reappear quite frequently. I immediately tried to run Malwarebytes anti-malware that is installed (but hasn't been updated in a few months because I always forget to check for updates). It started a full scan and detected 148 items. It had me restart my computer. Once is restarted a window came up saying some of the items could not be deleted. I tried opening Malwarebytes again but it will not run anymore.
I tried running it from the command prompt but the file mbam.exe is no where to be found in the Malwarebytes'Anti Malware folder. Mbam is there as an "application" and double clicking on it does nothing. I realize a troubleshooting idea is to rename the mbam.exe file but I can't locate it to rename.
On a side note, at one point the spyware seemed to freeze itself up when I x'ed out of it one time and got the following:
"vz.exe is not responding" end now which i did and then the window do you want to tell MS about the problem came up, which I x'ed out of.
However the spyware appeared to restart itself.
So my next thought was to do a system restore. I navigated to it and it says there are currently no restore points available. I also can't click to a different month on the calendar in that window.
Next I tried to reboot into safe mode. I get a black screen with a bunch of DOS looking prompts/files come up and the pages scrolls down and then crashes to the blue screen. So I can't get into safe mode.
I didn't realize I had McAfee Virus Scan Console on my computer, but I do, and was able to run a scan and it detected 5 trojans in a JAVA folder, which it said it deleted. However I am still getting the same pop ups I originally did so nothing seems to have been fixed.
When I restart my computer, If I click on Malwarebytes RIGHT AWAY it will start to load, but then also the spyware loads and the screen flashes quickly and Malwarebytes closes and will not open.
At this point I decided to seek help through forums and I came across this website and combofix. I clicked on the link to Download it through this forum, and when I do I ONLY get the option to RUN or CANCEL. I can't "save as" which is what I am suppose to do so I can save it to the desktop. I don't really know what or how to use combofix but I figure that was the route to take. However I can't get it to run on my computer even when I click on RUN.
I located the vz.exe on the task manager and end process, then try to open Malwarebytes, which doesn't open and I watch vz.exe reappear in the task manager.
This is where I am at this point. Spyware bubbles and pop ups appear every 2-3 min. I can x out of them. I can still use my browser.
I have heard of installing virus protection to a flash drive and then trying to run it from there but I am not familiar with how to do that.
Any help would be appreciated, I did my best to include as much information as I can.
