Hello to the Moderating Team at Bleeping Computer.com! I am new here but declined to post in the introductions because I am actually posting this for a friend as I attempt to help rid someone else's computer of malware.

I am on a major time constraint as well. I am moving to another state in about 13 days and need help fast in order to complete the task I have begun on my friend's computer!

So far I have completed every step (and a few more, in fact) in BC's Preparation Guide for malware removal before posting this Hijack This log. I do have two questions: 1. My friend has 2 separate accounts on the computer (Win XP) and I don't know if I need to go through all of the steps again on the other account as well or not. Please advise. 2. Is CyberPatrol worth keeping on the computer?

Thanks in advance to those who are donating their time and expertise to computer illiterates like me!! I appreciate all the hard work everyone here puts into helping other people. God bless you all!

a ClumsyFly posting for Dew2

P.S. Below the Hijack This log is a separate message I posted on NetIntegration Forums last week - it may have more helpful information than I have posted here.

Hello to all the wonderful, helpful computer techs at Net Integration!

I am new here but was told I might find some great help. My computer has been hijacked and I've taken some steps to get it back, but am unsure of what to do next.

My system is as follows:

Dell Dimension 4600 PC
Microsoft Windows XP Operating System
(If there's more info you need, please ask!)

So far, here's what I've done (in order):

1. Ran Trend Micro Housecall and Cleaner (it found 11 viruses, cleaned 7 of them; 22 Spyware Programs and removed only 4 of them)
2. Ran Symantec Online Virus Scan
3. Defragmented the disk drive and ran a scan disk of C:\
4. Ran Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta program and deleted found viruses
5. Deleted All Cookies
6. Turned off System Restore after making a backup disk
7. Ran SpyBot and AdAware and Deleted any problems

The Viruses/Spyware I've found are these:

Claria
Vondu
Winfixer
Virtumundo
CommonName

I downloaded Hijack This but have not run it as yet since I'm not certain what I need to delete at this point. If there are any other steps I'm missing, please advise. There are still viruses showing up, so there must be a program in the reg keys reinstalling at startup.

I look forward to someone's reply. Happy Turkey Day!!

Now that Thanksgiving weekend is past, I'm hoping to hear from someone soon... (Please do advise if I posted in the wrong forum in order to get help.)

Meanwhile, another issue I'm having is that I can't complete a scandisk. I don't know if it's related to all the other issues... but...

Also, I am running Windows XP with 2 separate accounts. Does that mean I have to go in and run Hijack This for each account, and then clean each one up separately, or can I accomplish it all on one account only?

Thanks again!

Hello, David,

Thanks so much for your reply! I have not been at my computer (or my neighbor's) for a couple of days, so I just read your post. I have printed your instructions and will begin working through the steps tomorrow in the a.m. at some point. I will respond again when I have completed your list and hope to hear from you real soon! (I am leaving this state in 11 days and will have access to my friend's computer even less time than that! All to say I'm on a serious time crunch. I am hoping my friend will be able to take over successfully once I am gone.)

God bless and thanks again for your help!!

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link for "SpySweeper" to download the program. NOTE: DO NOT click the Free Spyware Scan link.
  • Install it.
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Then reboot your computer - IMPORTANT
Then post a new HJT log

Dear David,

Before I post the two logs, I have 2 other things I wish to inquire about. First, do you consider "Cyber Patrol" a good program to keep on the computer? and Second, I have tried twice now to uninstall the McAfee desktop firewall (already uninstalled the McAfee virus protection software) and have been unable to do so (even in safe mode). How can I get that thing off my system? Any ideas? Thanks so much once again for your hard work on my behalf!!

Here's the Spysweeper Log:

 Download CleanUp!
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
  • Once its done, close the program.
Reboot and post a new HJT log

David,

Okay, did all that. Did you notice the questions I added at the top of my last post? Anyway, the McAfee firewall is still in my friend's startup toolbar (disabled). Oh, also, do I need to do anything to the other account on this computer, or is it okay to follow all of your steps on only the one account? Here's the latest HJT Log:

First, do you consider "Cyber Patrol" a good program to keep on the computer?

Well, i never heard of it - if you paid for it, keep it.

For the mcafee problem, i spent a good time looking around, and i found success by disabling the program first, then trying to remove it

First, Open notepad ad copy the following in bold into the windows:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808"=-

Click file, save and change "save file type" to "all files". Name it as "fix.reg" and save it to the desktop.

Close all programs and double click on the .reg file on your desktop.

It will enter something to the registry.

Reboot and With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeUpdaterUI] "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe" /StartedFromRunKey
O4 - Global Startup: McAfee Desktop Firewall Tray.lnk = ?
O23 - Service: McAfee Desktop Firewall Service (FireSvc) - Networks Associates Technology, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee Desktop Firewall for Windows XP\FireSvc.exe
O23 - Service: McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework) - Network Associates, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe

______________

Reboot again and try and uninstall Mcafee. If it again doen't work, let me know what happens, i.e. error codes etc....

David,

Thanks again for your help!

I followed the steps and Hijack This gave me the following alert (after hitting "Fix checked"):

"Hijack This

Unexpected error occurred! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in sub GetLongPath(?.exe).
Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing and what version of Windows you have."

Now, even though the McAfee firewall icon is no longer in my startup tray, I cannot uninstall the program. I get the following "Information" box when I try to uninstall it:

"The McAfee Desktop Firewall installer has detected that the system has not been restarted since a previous product installation/uninstall. Cannot continue until the system has restarted." Then there's an OK button underneath. I have been trying to uninstall through the add/remove programs section of the control panel. Perhaps I need to go into the McAfee file and use their uninstaller?? Perhaps I just need to search "McAfee" in all files and folders and simply delete them?? Not sure what to do next with this.

I'm also getting an alert every time I log on now from SpySweeper that says the following:

"Spy Sweeper has detected new programs that will start when Windows starts.
If you just installed or updated a program, including Windows upadates,
you should not remove these items. To remove items added without your knowledge,
select each item you do not want and click Remove. To keep items you
added, select each item you want and click Keep.

CWU_AutoStartup
DellSupport
msnmsgr
MoneyAgent"

Two Boxes below: "Select All" and "Deselect All"

I haven't done anything as yet, just closed the alert.

Another alert I was getting was something to do with a startup change and system32.shell32.dll. It didn't stay up long enough for me to get anymore than that! Yikes! Anyway, things get more interesting while my time runs out! hehe I'm wondering when it will be safe to 1. Uninstall SpySweeper (before the free trial ends) and 2. Turn on the System Restore.

Thanks for all the quick help! I have about 3 days left before I'm gone from this computer, but maybe my friend will be game to take it on when I leave... If all of the sudden you don't hear from us for awhile, please know that the Army is famous for quick action and my friend may have been called away for awhile. I'll encourage him to keep checking here for help after I'm gone. I left a small donation for you, David, in gratitude. I wish I could have done more! Until your next post, God bless!

Thanks very much.....

You can uninstall SpySweeper now...

I've scoured the net long and hard.. and i found a good solution. The only thing is that it's quite advanced. How confident are you with computers? Here it is below:

Fix
Manual Removal of Desktop Firewall. Please note these instructions do not touch on the framework service and are therefore intended for machines where ePO Agent or VirusScan Enterprise are currently installed. If these other products are not installed and you wish to remove the Framework Service please see the NOTE at the end.

1) Registry Section

Please take extra care to only remove the items listed and not their containing keys. Backup the registry prior to performing these steps and if in doubt about the use of the registry and the registry editor (regedit) please consult Microsoft documentation on the subject.

Some keys if they cannot be removed using regedit, may need to be removed with regedt32. regedt32 allows you to alter the permissions on a key so that the account of the logged on administrator has full control, and can therefore delete them as required.

To open the registry editor: Start, Run, regedit (press enter)

To open regedt32: Start, Run, regedt32 (press enter)

Please navigate to and delete the keys below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\McAfee Desktop Firewall

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\McAfee Firewall Rules

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{718CF0D3-DCDF-428E-9F6C-258F065C8D6D}

*** Take care here to remove only the final key "{8A8C9088-028F-4794-A988-BB5AE6BBEF16}"
and NOT the containing key "{4D36E975-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

2) Disk contents to be removed

Caution: The below items can vary and they depend on the Operating System and Install Drive.

a) Substitute the C:\ for the drive you had the product installed to (e.g. d:\ )

 The below "McAfee Desktop Firewall for Windows 2000" item should be replaced with which ever version has been installed.
e.g on a windows XP machine you should have "McAfee Desktop Firewall for Windows XP"

For any files which will not be deleted, please make a note of them and complete the remaining files. Once all have been done, please reboot and then go back to remove any files or folders which were not removed the first time round.

Folders to be removed. In each case please aslo remove all contents of the folders:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\McAfee Fire\ c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\McAfee Desktop Firewall\ c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Network Associates\McAfee Fire\ c:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Application Data\Network Associates\McAfee Fire\ c:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee Desktop Firewall for Windows 2000\

The following files should be removed if they still exist, take care to remove these files, and these files only:

On Windows XP please substitute WINNT for WINDOWS (e.g. c:\windows\MDFTEMP.txt)

c:\WINNT\MDFTEMP.txt

Ya know, David, if it were my computer, I might be game, but I wouldn't want to trash my friend's system. Not after all the help you've given me to get the junk off of it! I think I'll pass on this one. I'll let him know that the fix is here if he wants to give it a go later.

I'll uninstall Spysweeper tomorrow. So, other than McAfee, is the system clean now? Sunday night will be the last time I'll have access to my friend's computer. Thanks so much for your help, David! You are a gem!!

David,

There are two more issues, one that keeps coming up right after I log on to one of the accounts. I'm getting an alert from Microsoft Antispyware (the beta program that I use along with SpyBot and AdAware) that it has authorized a change to the startup reading:

windows\system32\shell32.dll

I'm assuming this is okay? I think the words "common files" were also in the string somewhere. Well, let me know if this is a problem. Also, in the C:\ directory there's a whole list of "dump" files with numbers after them. Is it safe to delete these? What are they, anyway?? Okay, I'll post my last HJT log one more time just in case (since I'm so short on time). I'll log on once again tomorrow night just to make sure everything's a go. Thanks again, David, and God bless!

Download WinPFind!
  • Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
  • When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer.
  • Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed.
  • Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
 Click Here to do a Panda online scan
  • If it asks you install active x controls click Yes
  • If a box comes up telling you to install the program also click Yes
  • Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options
  • Complete the scan and post the log that you can save afterwards in the same way you did the HJT log.
  • It is normal for it to take a reasonable time to complete
Please post back with both logs. We can then decide what to do from there.

David
