Hey guys! I have a problem and have tried to do as much as I know how to, but it wasn't enough. Everytime I reboot there is a new .exe (A0000xxx.exe) file created in System Volume Information\_restore...\RPx that nod32 tells me is a 'variant of Win32/Small.FB trojan' and Kaspersky online scanner tells me is 'Trojan-Download.Win32.Agent.uj' ( http://www.viruslist.com/en/find?search_mo....Win32.Agent.uj ).

The modification date in the exe properties is always "Saturday, October 15, 2005, 11:23:12 PM", so I tried doing a search for Oct 15th, but that didn't seem all that useful. I found it interesting that the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file was modified at 11:23:18 PM on that day (maybe trying to connect to the net for more trojans?) and that rasphone.exe was created in Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk at 11:23:31 PM on the same day.

I have tried turning off System restore, scanning in safe mode, then turning it back on, but the .exe's are still created. This makes me believe that it is possibly something in the registry, but I know hardly anything about the registry. My hijackthis log file seems clean (I'm pretty sure), so I really don't know where to go from here. Here is my log though, just incase:

Uninstall Unspy from add/remove programs, turn off and on the system restore, reboot and see if the program is gone.

very interesting.. it isn't in add\remove programs, and there is no such C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\ folder.
I tried copying the link into 'my computer', and it comes up with "The page cannot be displayed".
Shouldn't it show a 'file missing' in hijackthis if it actually isn't there? I just did another scan, and it still shows that line.. should I click it and press fix checked?

No...O4 entries wont show file missing.

Fix this line:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [UnSpyPC] "C:\Program Files\UnSpyPC\UnSpyPC.exe"

Reboot and see if that file is recreated in system restore. Can you submit a copy of the virus file to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php

?

So I fixed the check and it isn't displayed in hijackthis anymore. However, the same old .exe problem in system restore. I tried turning off/on system restore, but still the same. I just submitted the file! Thank you so much

To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  • Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  • Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  • Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  • The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  • Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)]

Alrighty so I ran that program and left the computer and just got home.. I came home to nod32 telling me that there were two threats that tried to load; windows\system32\hlmicro.exe (Win32/Asware.MsnAgent application) and windows\system32\bndmod.exe (Win32/TrojanClicker.Small trojan). They were both trying to be accessed by C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Local Settings\Temp\VBNY.exe , which has the same icon as this RootkitRevealer, so I am assuming that it is just the scanner that tried to scan them and nod32 saw that. However, I went to the system32 folder and I did not see those two .exe's.. so I don't know what happened. I hit 'delete' for both files in nod32, so I guess they are gone.

Now for the RootkitRevealer log, there were only 13 discrepancies found:

I agree...lets try this. Someone suggested your infection may be connected to another one, so lets give something a try.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

dmkwd.exe.. what is that? Is that possibly the problem? Does the fixwareout somehow show hidden processes or something?? I hope this is good!! Thank you SO much again

edit: actually WOW! The exe's aren't being created in system restore anymore!! However, is that dmjwd.exe thing a problem? Also, there is a whole pile of junk in my recycle bin now (i.e. folders named like 070FA1SF, EL2TS18Z, etc., as well as a couple exe's like favme.exe and hwiper.exe). Are these from the program, and should I therefore empty the recycle bin? You are truly amazing :flowers:

Does this file exist?

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmkwd.exe

If so submit a copy to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php

Then fix this entry in HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmkwd.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmkwd.exe

and then do the following :

Enter your control panel and double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Then post a new log

I did not have a dmkwd.exe file afterall..
Is it the O17 line that is bothering you? I just did what you said and checked, and it is now still set to find the DNS server automatically.. so should I fix the O17 line, or leave it?

Fix these two lines:

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://appldnld.m7z.net/qtinstall.info.app...llInstaller.exe

Then reboot and run the fixwareout program against from the isntructions above and post its resulting log along with a new hjt log

So I can delete those programs and delete my recycle bin now?

You are the man, I appreciate this so very much. I never thought that I would have to ask for help in forums like this, but I am so truly grateful that they are here for when it is needed. I can't thank you enough :flowers:
