Hi: Just got a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Toshiba has placed an icon called "Buy at ToshibaDirect" in the right hand side of the startup menu. I've checked the startup folder, control panel, the Toshiba applets and msconfig but can't find it. Goes without saying I'd rather not have a Toshiba commercial on my startup menu.

I've run all the steps to completion. Here's the cut/paste of the HijackThis logfile. Any advice appreciated!

Hi, slagrec1.

When you click start and the xp syle start menu opens, the "Buy at ToshibaDirect" icon is on the right side listed with My Computer , Control Panel, Search, Run, etc... Is that correct?

I'm not sure they included the toshiba icon, but the settings for those are at:
Right click any empty space in the taskbar > properties > start menu tab, start menu > customize > advanced tab

Scroll down the start menu Items and remove the checkmark for toshiba if it's listed.
I suspect it won't be listed, so lets check for that value in the registry.

Open notepad, copy and paste the contents of the quote box below to notepad.
In notepad click file, then save as
Name it look.bat , change the save as type to all files
Place it on your desktop, then double click look.bat to run it.
Copy the contents of key.txt that opens and paste it here in your next reply.

regedit /e key.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced"
start notepad key.txt

Thanks for responding JG! 3-part response...

1. No Toshiba in the Start Menu / Advanced tab (I'd checked before posting.

2. IT IS in the registry but not in the excerpt you asked me to paste. Here it is -- I don't know what to do about it though...

My Computer

Command REG_SZ Buy at ToshibaDirect
method REG_SZ shellExecute
Param1 REG_SZ C:\WINDOWSToshibaDirect\startmenuPage.html

3. Here's the HKEY_CURRENT _USER you asked for....

Any advice appreciated!

Maybe it is, at least this one looks suspicious.

Lets change the value to 0, or no don't show. We can change it back if needed.

Open notepad, copy and paste the contents of the quote box below to notepad.
In notepad click file, then save as
Name it fix.reg change the save as type to all files
Place it on your desktop, then double click fix.reg to run it.
Answer yes at the prompt to add it to the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Restart your system and check for the start icon.

Any luck?
