My computer has a dreaded Redirect Virus, but none of my programs can seem to detect it. These include: McAfee Security Center, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Norton Power Eraser, and TDSS Killer.

I also found a few web sites that suggested looking in the Control Panel/Device Manager, but nothing sticks out of the Non-Plug and Play Drivers folder.

The virus works intermittently, only about once every ten times I click on a Google link. It also is causing a balloon to pop up stating that "windows has blocked some start up programs".

Grrr.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

It is safe to assume that I am not that computer savvy, but do well enough to follow step by step directions.

I followed all the steps in the prep guide, except for that the CD Emulator doesn't seem to work according to the procedures outlined. It runs, but does not ask me to reset the computer. The GMER program freezes up and windows shuts it down or gives me the blue screen of death.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Ken

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

Gringo,

Thanks for the help with killing this virus! I am practically pulling my hair out.

I am a little confused about what to do with the files you asked for; the first part of you message says not to attach anything, the other asks for the reports.

To kill two birds with one stone, I will attach the files you want and also post the reports in my reply. I hope this is OK. The date stamp is for my files so I can keep the reports separate.

As far as problems go, I am still getting redirected to other sites but not as often. Lately I have been getting "Windows has caused some startup programs from running" almost every 10 minutes now. I also don't know if it is related or not, but my automatic java updater has stopped working. (Don't worry I still haven't installed any new software since being told not to!)

Again, thanks for the help! I hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving!

Cheers,

Ken

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving!

I have run Combofix; the log is attached.

Not any significant problems noticed but a few oddities:
- I had to run Combofix about three times before it stared up completely.
- A Microsoft internet explorer icon has reappeared on my desktop.
- Firefox asked if it could be my default browser (it already was).
- I had to restart my computer before Mcaffe Security Center would run again.

I have since turned on all my firewalls and virus protection.

My computer seems to be running the same (maybe a little faster? My internet connection seems to scream now, compared to my previous loading times) but I am still getting the "Windows has blocked some startup programs" balloon as frequently as I have before. I did a little Google browsing and have yet to be redirected, but I haven't been on the 'net that often this week and the redirect has been pretty intermittent.

Hope that helps!

I really appreciate your diligence in getting this resolved, thanks for all the help!!

Ken

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6522
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>;*.local

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo,

As directed I have run the Combofix script you have written.

There were not any problems running the program, everything ran great the first time.
You didn't mention it, but I figured it was implied that I keep the anti-virus stuff off while it was running.

There were still some residual "quirks" as before, Explorer icon appearing on the desktop, etc. I figure that stuff is happening after Combofix cleans things out.

The computer seems to be running well now, whatever you are doing seems to be working! I have notice significant start up times since following your advice and using combofix.

On an interesting note; I am still getting the "windows has blocked some start up programs" balloon, but after right clicking on the taskbar icon, my Malwarebytes malware seems to be the one which is being blocked. I don't remember wanting it to that and I can't seem to find a way to change the settings in Software Explorer.

Thanks again,

Ken

On an interesting note; I am still getting the "windows has blocked some start up programs" balloon, but after right clicking on the taskbar icon, my Malwarebytes malware seems to be the one which is being blocked. I don't remember wanting it to that and I can't seem to find a way to change the settings in Software Explorer.

Have you gone into MSCONFIG to re-enable all the startup entries?

*nervous laugh* Uh, no. I have reset the startup options, and haven't seen the balloon since.

Are there still viruses in my computer?

The computer is running like a champ! The question is how to keep it that way. I thought I had my bases covered with Malwarebytes and McAfee, but obviously not. Do I run Combofix every now and then?

Hello

starting to look very good

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Did as I was instructed; ran into a few kinks.

I was not able to update Java. I was given the following messages in three separate windows:

"bin\awt.dll: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."

"Java™ Update fails to apply changes to your system."

"Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Just for kicks I cleared the Java cache, but was still not able to update it.

Temp File Cleaner ran as advertised.

I already had MBAM on my computer, and ran an updated scan from it rather than install the same software again.
No problems detected.

Also I was able to successfully install HijackThis, but seemed to run into a few problems during the scan.

During the scan I received the message:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save file as 'hosts' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'."

Nothing was mentioned about it in your instructions, so I took a leap of faith and "ran as an administrator".

Program seemed to run fine, no problems reported.

The reports from both are below.

Thanks again for all the help,

Ken

Hello

run this to remove all older versions of java then try to update again

:Run JavaRa

  • Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

That error from Hijackthis is normal for vista and is not a problem as we are not going to do anything with the host file

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Skytel] Skytel.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PLFSetI] C:\Windows\PLFSetI.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LManager] C:\PROGRA~1\LAUNCH~1\LManager.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ePower_DMC] C:\Program Files\Acer\Empowering Technology\ePower\ePower_DMC.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acer Assist Launcher] C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Assist\launcher.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acer Product Registration] "C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Registration\ACE1.exe" /startup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Corel File Shell Monitor] C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2\CorelIOMonitor.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CLMLServer] "C:\Program Files\Acer Arcade Deluxe\Acer Arcade Deluxe\Kernel\CLML\CLMLSvc.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Gringo,

Ran JavaRa (twice!), and the program said it removed all old versions, but still unable to update Java. Windows is trying to update to Java 6 version 22.

"Fixed" all the items mentioned with HijackThis, no problems noted!

I have tried to run the Eset Online Scanner, but the program keeps freezing around 41%. All the firewalls and virus scans are off, but I can't seem to get it past that point.

Cheers,

Ken

Gringo,

Success!

I tried to install java from the website, but the computer was still giving me the same errors as before. In a fit 'o rage, I removed the old java from the computer via the programs and features (through the control panel) first, and then installed java from the website. That seemed to do the trick.

The Free Online Scanner worked as advertised, the report is attached/pasted below.

Cheers,

Ken
