Hello all

Well, as you may have guessed I am having pc problems like we all do sometimes.

▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼
Straight to it, browsers Mozilla & Chrome both redirect an address/link about once every 10-15 attempts.

• Have already used recommended software removals such as SUPERanti-spyware, Spyware Doctor, and scanned with AVG & have always been using mentioned virus scanner.

• I use Windows 7 - Home Premium (64bit) & have always had windows firewall enabled & never had this redirecting problem as bad as this before after using what seems to be every trick in the book and not once needing to go onto a forum to post logs to rid pc of MAJORLY annoying infections.

NOTE: GMER rootkit finder did not work as it is supposed to I believe since it denied availability to check all that was needed, I will provide a screen capture pic to show my point & there were no findings too.

One more thing... ♫♫♫ ... ♫♫♫ ... I forgot to mention I have Windows running on a solid state drive(ssd) Corsair 64gb if it make a difference to anything other than fast boot/load times!!!

Having said all that I would appreciate any help from users/mods, and YES I DID READ THE PREP GUIDE!!!!!!!!

THX for reading and will try to post ASAP.

OK update,

I realize it takes awhile for a response here since there are so many people to help but I decided to make second post to BUMP with important updated info rather than edit 1st post....

I found out that it may be the awful router redirect problem. I was browsing internet w/ Mozilla using other pc(laptop) in same room with our Netgear 802.11n router. The pc is connected to internet via ethernet cable and the same sexually explicit pop-ups came out of nowhere, which were the same that I was getting on the desktop pc in my room, although redirects didn't happen as much or not at all  since I was only on for a short time to use the printer for homework. This whole time I thought the redirects/pop-ups were a rootkit/malware/virus etc. only on my desktop, but the center of the problem may just be the router itself!

Our Netgear router is a couple months old since all other new routers seemed to break so easily, but I never had this redirect problem till we got this new router awhile back <_< .

So, I looked into the issue and people say that when they reset the router to factory settings it solved the redirect issue. Maybe ours got hacked early on, and as far as I know my dad used a good encrypted password yada yada... since he sets up the network and gives us the password. So, I don't know why this happened to this router and not the others beforehand. If and when he can reset it I will see what and how he does it so this redirect issue won't happen once again.

Help and opinions still welcome of course. THX.

Okay, we have a spate of redirections through the router at the moment.

Before we go there though let's make sure that the PC is now clean.

Gmer doesn't work on 64 bit, by the way.

Run TDSSKiller

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Please run OTL for me next

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Open OTL and let's clear up a bit.

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:OTL

Then click the Run Fix button at the top

Let the program run unhindered.

When done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now please run MBAM

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If MBAM won't update then download and update MBAM on a clean computer then save the rules.ref folder to a memory stick. This file is found here: 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' then transfer it across to the infected computer.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thx for fast reply m0le!

Malwarebytes wasn't able to update and I don't know how to go to a clean computer and install the program since all of our computers are affected by the router that is providing internet! I even tried other laptop mentioned earlier connected via ethernet and it also didn't update malwarebytes. I'll give a screen shot with the error display ok. Unless I gotta go bother a friend to transfer malwarebytes updates from their pc to mine, which I'm not gonna do, there's no other way I can see the updates being possible via transfer in my household. And I used malwarebytes 2 weeks before and it didn't really do much, just little things kind of like SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, just FYI.

And, here is the log file from OTL...

Any other machines on the network experiencing problems?

I think as the PC seems clean, and if the other machines are not having issues, we should reset your router and see how that goes.

First, please answer the question at the top. :)

Well, we have 4 computers in house using the router.

Everybody has laptops except for me! Nobody mentioned problems on their laptops, but when I used my mom's laptop with Firefox I did notice semi-frequent redirecting and pop-ups of the same nature that my pc was receiving way beforehand.

I will have a look at my family's other laptops and see how those are affected too and report on those accordingly.

***Here is the Malwarebytes screen capture pic that I promised last post and forgot due to rush to work!!
P.S. - No threats were found from full scan, mind you this is from a database of 4/29/10

:thumbup2: I may need to check they're clean too before we attempt to clear this redirect.

So tomorrow when they are awake and have access to these other pc's on the network, should I do the laborious task of running all the same anti-malware programs on each of them as on my pc or just see if those other computers have redirect issues and tell you?

At this stage I think it's just a case of test running their browsers to see if they have the same redirection problem as you. When you can confirm what the scale of the problem is we can then take action on all or none of these PCs before trying to straighten your one out.

Back in action. My decision was to go ahead and run hijackthis, gmer, and DDS logs on my mom's laptop in the room with the router connected via ethernet. This laptop did have redirecting & pop-ups as well, but I decided to run the mentioned programs anyways to understand the scale of the issue as I mentioned. I also used Firefox for awhile on my sister's laptop and her's also had issues, although mainly just pop-ups ads in new windows. But, I've noticed that the redirects on my desktop can be intermittent, meaning a lot of redirects in a given period while other times appearing not to happen for 15 minutes or so! Just random the redirects seem to be.

The router just has to be the answer to this mess!

Anyway, here are the logs in order of: 1) Hijackthis, 2) Gmer. ----(I can also post DDS upon request)----

The router is probably the issue but every machine linked to this network could be infected. We need to disconnect them from the network and clean each one in turn before we reset the router otherwise it could just reinfect the entire network.

If you want to start this then all the PCs have to be disconnected and then we can start with your mom's PC (we'll call it PC1) then please post a DDS log for her machine.

Ok sounds like a plan!

It seems very doable . I didn't think we would need to disconnect all 4 PC's at once and then clean each one individually while the internet will be unplugged/turned off so as to not contaminate each one again after "cleaning" each pc one by one. Sounds a little confusing but I get the point.

SO let me know what programs to clean the 4 PC's with as I might be able to do this tomorrow while everybody is gone and I will be home before class late afternoon!

Just confused on some simple info! Do I send you the DDS of my mom's PC before or after switching off internet on all 4 PC's? So, either I send you DDS before we turn them all off or I copy the file to someone else's clean PC so as to adhere to your idea of not infecting all the other PC's in a domino effect? If the latter option, that may pose a problem! I'll try and make due.

Or am I making things too complicated? Let me know since I can probably do it Tuesday before 4pm PST!!! I want to get rid of this thing ASAP B) if all goes according to plan.

Step by step would sure be helpful on this one, just to clarify everything!
Thx again m0le for your time and helping me out on this!!!
