Hello,
I have an issue on my netbook where most if not all links to new pages on the net are being redirected to ad or search sites, a reported attack page and most recently a page which barely loaded before resizing my window and telling me I had a virus. It then brought up a window with an option to 'remove' said virus - I clicked on the x - then it started what looked like a virus remover, but I killed it asap to be sure.

I tried opening IE, but it's a very old version and didn't seem able to connect to any sites.

Additionally, when I start up, windows tells me a process - i think it was spoolersub or something similar had to be closed because windows is protecting itself from a virus, then does the same for windows explorer, which then resets. There is also a sysreg window open, but on the right in the white box, it only says 'memo' and in the grey area to the left, there are no buttons or anything and only two words - I forget what they were I'm afraid!

After another restart, I still get redirected on any webpage unless i type the address in manualy. Even editing down a link location doesn't stop the redirect unless it's edited down to the main homepage.

I ran HJT and used an online key to see if there was anything obviously bad. There was one entry under O4 \run: which ended with igsak.exe, to which I have been unable to find any reference. It had a CLSID number - or at least I assume it was one (within curly brackets - about the right length and construction) but found no results for it when I used www.systemlookup.com. It was in Application Data\Mizuzu, but I don't recognise this folder. A quick search tells me it's a japanese name.

Knowing nothing about it, I have left it be, but suspect it is nothing good!

Lastly, when I tried to turn the computer off last, nothing happened. I did delete one entry i was fairly sure was malware with HJT - i think it was srvsxb32.exe, or something like that. I couldn't find the exe on a google search, the closest was srv32.exe which was fairly well documented as a trojan/virus. I hope I didn't delete something important!

If you need an HJT log or similar, I can provide.

Thanks!

Ed

Only new issue is that I realised when I went to unblock scripts that eset was not running. It came preinstalled and I was about to replace it - it hadn't been updated in a while, but it always runs on startup. When I CTRL Shift ESC'd to open the task manager, it didn't respond. I don't know if it's disabled or just inaccessible.

Thanks again!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

No problems during the fix. Task manager works again and webpages are no longer redirecting!

Eset and Microsoft security essentials just popped up to tell me that they found a win32/trojan.
I am a little confused as it is saying that firefox is the threat. I'm writing this on my desktop. I'm unsure what to do, I don't want to remove firefox, but if it's being used by a trojan should I clean it?

Hello

It looks like you may have a very bad file infector onboard before we go any further make sure this computer is not connected to a network and I want you to run this online scan to see how bad it may be

It will take awhile but we need to see if it is active - if you have any external harddrives that you have connected to this computer have them connected while doing the scan

Ok, but I connect to the internet through the network, should I do the scan first or can I load it to my desktop and transfer it with a dongle?

Just remembered, someone in the past got me to load a recovery console, it flashes up before windows loads. Would this act like a system restore? To a configuration without the virus?

Hello

only hook up the computer to do this scan - anytime after that if run any tools pass them with a usb drive.

the recovery console is like a mini operating system but won't have internet access, we may need it later.

Run the scan and lets see what we get.
