Hi,
I have experienced this over the years but never understood why it happens or how to fix it. When an icon is placed on the desktop or in the tool tray from the web it reverts to an internet explorer looking page after a period of time, instead of keeping the original looking icon. I would like to learn how to fix the problem.

Regards

Try clearing your temp internet files in Internet Explorer.

That happens, because IE stores sites favicons in temporary files.
Once those files are cleared, favicons are gone as well.

You'll need some 3rd party solution. See here: http://thedailyreviewer.com/windowsnet/view/help---ie-favorites-icons-keep-changing-back-to-default-icon-101258812
