Laptop cuts out without safety shutdown

Hi guys

I have an IBM X60 laptop. I replaced the battery and now have this problem whereby the laptop does not do a safety shutdown when it runs out of battery - it simply cuts out (as your TV would if you were to suddenly unplug it).

Is there anything I can do to change this?
