Hi,

When I tried running MalWareBytes AntiMalware, I get a BSOD. I was able to sucessfully update it before running, as I normally do, but as soon as I start it, it spends about 6 seconds loading up, then it crashes & I get the BSOD. While they don't normally conflict, the second time I tried running MBAM, I had turned off SAS with realtime protection, just in case they were not getting along. But MBAM still gave me a BSOD with SAS off.

I ran CCleaner to clean out the usual temps files, etc. I ran MSCONFIG to check if any weird things were running at startup that might be affecting performance. I ran SuperAntiSpyware & it didn't find anything (it runs every night anyway).

I tried running Spybot Search & Destroy (also up-to-date). It ran for about 20 minutes, then stop with the message "User Abort! Scan Was Not Successfully Completed." But I did NOT stop it myself, which makes me suspect malware/trojans/etc are causing problems with these 2 programs. I restarted it & the same thing happened (I did NOT stop it). After that message, it continued scanning "directories", (according to the info on the bottom). After 59 minutes total, it came up with a message of "Congratulations! No immediate threats were found" even though it showed a "User Abort!" message above.

I did not at this time run Avast! It did run last night. If you want me to do so, I will try that too.

I am posting a Hijack This! log below to help you with perhaps figuring out what it going on. If you need to know anything else, just let me know. I think I have posted in the correct forum (I have used HT more on the Motley Fool's "Help with this STUPID computer" boards.

My PC & browsers have been running a tad slower than usual of late. No weird things popping up though. No programs asking me to buy them to get rid of "issues:, etc.

Within the last week, I updated/ran Secunia PSI to check for programs that needed updates. I then updated Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave, Java, Real Player. Might be 1 or 2 other programs in there that I'm not recalling right now. I had IE7 & upgraded it to IE8 also this week.

Best I recall, the last time I ran MBAM & SB S&D successfully was a couple of weeks ago.

I have a Dell Dimensions DXP051 with Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Edition, SP3, Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz, 1Gb RAM. For anti-virus/mal/spyware, I have: Sunbelt Personal Firewall (previously Kerio), Avast Anti-virus, Windows Defender, SAS Free Edition (with real-time protection), MBAM, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster (with autoupdate). I use Firefox 3.6.12 & IE8.

Thanks very much for any/all help!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Thank you. I will take the steps you list and report back.

I do understand that your wonderfully helpful forum gets very busy and response often takes days. I appreciate the time all the volunteers here give.

FYI, since I thought part of the delay may have been because the error was not malware, but a technical problem, and folks in this malware forum didn't see anything out of whack, I had posted some additional information under the OS - Windows XP forum. This gives the error report codes (re: iastor.sys) I received in the last crash. In case you are unaware of this other post, and the information may be helpful, the link to the post is:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic360932.html

Thanks again! I'll report back shortly.

FYI, while I was downloading these, the program RealUpgrade Launcher kept trying to launch itself on my internet connection. I have Sunbelt Personal Firewall currently set to notify me of all outgoing requests. This program has been in my system since I updated RealPlayer about 10 days ago. I have tried everything I know to stop what appears to be an autoupdater from Real. I've previously opened Real and shut off the autoupdate program. I've use MSCONFIG to shut off any of the Real autoupdaters there. When I run Windows Task Manager, I never see the process there. But it keeps trying to get out. Generally, I tend to leave autoupdaters shut off for some secondary/rarely used programs when they are especially annoying and resource hogs. I run Secunia PSI periodically to make sure I'm not missing any critical updates. I don't know if you can offer any suggestions for disabling this thing (or evenn if it might be a fake thing, since it refuses to die).

Thanks, and good luck with your sleuthing :)

PS, as you can probably tell, I had some things shut off when I downloaded/installed these to make sure there were not conflicts - Avast AV, SAS & Windows Defender were off. I left on Sunbelt Firewall. The other 3 programs are now back on.

Hello

I want to be sure - the only problem you have right now is that there is a problem with MBAM correct

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Yes, the only problem currently have is when I run MBAM in Windows normal mode. 4 seconds in, while enumerating the registry, it blue screens, displaying the error codes below. It runs fine in Safe Mode.

Everything else on the PC appears to be running fine. I do recall one instance (maybe 3 weeks ago???) when the PC blue screened while I had a LOT of FF browser windows open. 25 maybe, with multiple tabs on each. I do not know if I just overloaded it. I do only have 1MB RAM. I didn't jot down the codes on that. Browser has been running fine since with multiple window. I had 16 open yesterday, with tabs. There was a FF upgrade (and as you can see in the reports) several other programs were updated a while after that crash.

Error codes from last crash:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop: 0x000000D1 (0x00000018, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF734725F)
iastor.sys - Address F734725F base at F7338000, DateStamp 42b2bf42
dump physical memory

The error log after Windows restarts reads:

Error signature
BCCode: d1
BCP1: 00000018
BCP2: 00000002
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: F734725F
OSVer: 5_1_2600
SP: 3_0
Product 768_1

The error report contains:

Files included in this report:

To clarify, MBAM runs fine in Safe Mode. I didn't specify. Thought you might interpret it generally as the PC. MBAM allows me to download updates with no issues either, in Normal Windows mode.

I downloaded ComboFix. It asked me to download the Recovery Console. Both of those went ok, but when ComboFix ran the scan, it blue screen'd in the middle of it. Here's the response:

Plug & Play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver.
STOP: 0x000000CA (0x00000004, 0x842A1610, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory

What would you like me to do next? I don't have a ComboFix log since it stopped in the middle. Thanks.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.
