I have been getting re-directions in Mozilla which I thought I had repaired with Avast, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malware, which removed Trojan.Agent/GenC:\WINDOWS\MBR.EXE , and repaired Java files. The re-directs either take me from my email tab to a new site or open a new browser window. The latest redirect is:

hxxp://www.theclickcheck.com/?sub=48785&rm=aHR0cDovLzEwMDI1XzQ4Nzg1LmFkbWFya2V0cGxhY2UuY29t&pub=10025&cid=1240788163&ds=aHR0cDovL3JlYWxlc3RhdGUuYW9sLmNvbS9ibG9nLzIwMTAvMDkvMjgvY2FuLWZpeGVyLXVwcGVy%0Acy13b3JrLWZvci1maXJzdC10aW1lcnMvP05DSUQ9QU9MQ09NTXJlMDBiYW5ucGFpZDAwMDU%3D

I only detected the Hupigon virus during a startup scan with Avast, which states cannot remove it because the "file is too large." Scans with Malware or SuperAntiSpyware did not show the virus. During a start up scan with Avast, I received the following:

C:\hiberfil.sys Threat: Win32: Hupigon-ONX(trj) Error the file was not moved to chest.

I cannot log into one of my credit card sites with Mozilla, but am able to with IE. Only other problem seems to be "auto run" has been disabled as when I put in a CD or a flash drive, it not longer gives pops up choices of what programs I wish to open it with.

Reading about Avast at their forums I have found a lot about false positives with Hupigon, but no real advise on how to remove it. Another problem is that my computer never shipped with set-up disks, so a full formatting will be an issue, although all of my document and program files have been back-up on an external drive and this was before the redirection problems started. I do not have a "safe computer" to work from at this time. However, I am good at following directions but am not a big techie, so please give me help in plain English. Let me know if there is other information or logs you need and where I need to get it from on the computer. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Thanks, Bob

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.logs from DDS
2.log from RKUnHooker
3.let me know of any problems you may have had

Hi Gringo! I am very pleased to be working with you and cannot thank you enough for you time. Since I have posted, I have had very limited time on this computer, but when I use it , I am still getting redirects from Mozilla. Below are my logs. I disabled Avast before scanning and hope that was the right thing to do. My anti-spyware is not auto-on. I have copied and pasted Attach.txt rather than attach as per your instructions. I look forward to your next reply.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo:

Thanks for being here for me. I was able to run ComboFix with no problems. However, after I logged back on to the Internet after rebooting, a pop-up in a new window occured within a few minutes:

http://19593.155.filter.seedcornppc.com/ncp/checkBrowser?key=free%20diet%20programs&ip=24.47.32.184&n_d=19689946&ua=Mozilla%2F5.0%20%28Windows%3B%20U%3B%20Windows%20NT%205.1%3B%20en-US%3B%20rv%3A1.9.2.12%29%20Gecko%2F20101026%20Firefox%2F3.6.12%20%28%20%29

with a Firefox problem loading page warning:

Server not found Firefox can't find the server at 19593.155.filter.seedcornppc.com.

I have not run any other scans from Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, or Avast. I will await further directions from you. Below is the log from ComboFix:

Resetting Router

Let’s try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

flush the DNS:

Now lets flush the DNS on the computer:

  • click on Start
  • select run
  • enter cmd and hit enter
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Now lets check the router again

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: Posted Image <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results

I am a little uncertain when it comes to networks. Before I reset the router, my computer is not the controlling one on the network and I am hard-wired to the router. My girlfriend's laptop is the main computer for the network. So, I guess my question would be when I reset the router, should I then set up a new network with the my computer primary or put the network back in place the way it was? The network was named and password protected on her computer, and since my computer is secondary, there is no password protection for mine. Mine is Local Area Connection Windows Firwewall protected.

And, her computer is doing the redirection now as well.

Hello

Hers is password protected as she is going in wirelessly and it being primary has nothing to do with it.

when you reset the router you will need to name the network the same and use the same network key or you will have to change it on the laptop.

The password I talk about is when you log into the router from the browser to change any settings it ask for a user name and password all routers have a default user name and password and needs to be changed.

Just a question: I do not show the router at all when I look for it as it is only on my girlfriend's laptop. We were able to put a password in it, but could not name the router as it stays as Netgear.

When I am in my Network Connections, the top section shows "Internet Gateway" as connected. I thought maybe this should be disconnected, (since I connect through Local Area Connection). When I try to diconnect, I get an error message saying "It is not possible to disconnect at this time. The connection is currently busy with a connect or disconnect operation." Also, when I try double-click on the icon or view its status, it only will show it for 2 seconds, and I can see packets are being sent. What do I make of this if anything?

Gringo,

Fantastic! I cannot thank you enough for all of your help and how quickly you have replied to me!

I was able to close the Internet Gateway down. And, with a little research, I was able to learn how to launch Netgear router in my browser, and configure the router with a name, password, and limit the wireless network to just the laptop's Mac address. Lots of new knowledge...I also took the opportunity to change the DNS on the laptop and flushed its DNS on it as well.

So far, so good with no redirects so far tonight. I will monitor over the next few days and see how things are going.

Do I need to do another boot-up scan with Avast to see if the Hupigon shows up, or any other scans with Malware or AntiSuperSpyware, or anything else in the mean time?

Bob
