hello
Im have a terrible time with my windows vista running ie 8 on it.. It is continually crashing. I did a system recovery not long ago and resolved problem. However when I added all my data saved to external harddrive, the problem came back.
What I've tried : scanned for virus using Nortons 360, cleaned disc using disc cleanup, used disc defragmenter. Then bought regdefense by xionix and ran registry clean up many times. Used spybot several times...Still it crashs with the resultant blue screen. Im sorry but I dont remember the data from the blue screen. The screen jus says something windows had to shut down etc. If its helpful, I can record all the data.
Thank you any guidance or input
Dave

System manufacturer and model?

Did you check the manufacturer's website...for a history of your initial problem?

Running registry cleaner software...was not a good move, IMO.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.Louis

Thanks for the reply. I did not know that registry cleaner/optimizers could be harmful. You reasons make sense to me. I used the regedit after my problems started though. I doubt that regedit has contributed anything to the problems Im facing..positive or negative since the incidence and type of problem hasnt changed. Certainly nothing positive. An absolutely nothing worth $35

I have an HP AMD Athalon 3GHz. 3G Ram. 32 bit operating system.

I did contact HP and chatted with a rep. It was decided that the only thing I could do was to do a full system recovery and set the unit back to mfr settings. That worked great. problem solved. I wanted my pictures etc back...and ultimately had the system set back to an earlier point...then the problem resumed. Ja. Baffling.
But Im reasonably sure I dont have a virus...though Im far from being certain. I went thru all of the windows updates etc. Had windows updated to ie8. Funny thing is that I never use windows. I use Firefox. But it too has now begun this crashing.
One important observation...that the issue with crashing, while not limited to, seems to happen when the unit is either idle or not in use or over night. I know that means something...I just dont know what.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
Dave

Something to try...

Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

Well...that's quite a variety of errors.

No clues there that I can see...too many different errors. Let's wait for others to review this.

With that many errors please do the following:

How to Test your RAM

Guide Overview

The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to check whether your system's RAM (Ramdom Access Memory) is working properly. Bad RAM can lead to a whole host of problems, often which do not appear to have a single cause -- appearing as systemwide glitches, blue screens, and other system trouble. MemTest86+ provides a very good detection mechanism for failed RAM, and is about as good a test you get short of actually replacing the module itself.

Tools Needed
Please perform these steps from a separate, working, machine.Perform these steps on the problem machine.
  • Put your CD in the drive and configure your machine to boot to the CD. This is different on all machines, but it's usually by pressing F12 or F10 as your system boots, and selecting either "CDROM" or your cdrom drive. If you are unable to force a CDRom boot, reply with the make and model of your machine and I should be able to get you exact instructions.
  • If you've done it correctly, MemTest86+ will start to run automaticly, as shown below:

  • If you want to be reasonably your RAM is OK, then allow MemTest to run until you see this message:

On the other hand, if you want to be completely sure your RAM is OK, allow MemTest to run overnight. Memtest will run forever until power is pulled on the machine.
  • Check the MemTest screen for any reported errors. Errors will appear as RED warnings at the bottom of the screen, similar to the following screenshot:

  • Hard-Reset the machine, removing the MemTest disk in the process.
If you didn't get an error screen, Congratulations! :)

Compliments of Billy O'Neal.
