About a week ago my DSL modem died (8yr old Intel) & I couldn't connect to the internet.
I contacted Quest (service provider) & after a cursory attempt at faulfinding over the phone,
they decided to ship me a new modem ActionTek GT701 (free, so no complaints from me).
I installed it about a week ago & since then have had nothing but problems with my computer.
Coincidence? Maybe, but I'm just mentioning it as part of the narrative. One thing is different
between it & my old modem: it connects at startup & remains connected all the time, whereas
the old Intel had to be physically connected by clicking on an icon on the desktop.

Within a few days I started experiencing browser hijack problems; in a Google search for instance,
clicking on any search resulted in a redirection to any of a number of spam advertising sites,
both with Firefox & Exploder. About a day later a link to a "disk defragmeter" (Quick Defragmenter)
showed up on the desktop and all sorts of bogus error messages popped up from the task bar.
Surmising that I had picked up a virus, I ran a scan with my virus checker which came up clean, but
on inspection, showed that it had only scanned one file. I forced it to rescan the whole computer
which of course turned up negative. Having a look at the task manager, I also notice that after a
few minutes of idle time, one of the many copies of svchost.exe becomes very active
for no apparent reason. Killing it stopped the activity without anything ceasing to work on the
computer. Two other processes that I didn't recognize were also active processes: 45396265.exe and

AphedsKjsy.exe. A little searching on the showed them to be undesirable, so I hunted them down &

deleted them (in C:\Docs ... |local...\temp). I also zapped their entries in the registry.
There is an unknown (unnamed) application showing up if I run msconfig, but I cannot uncheck it
as "I need to be the Administrator". But I am the Administrator. Samer result even in safe mode.

All good so far, but the browser redirect problem remains.
After coming across your site, I have followed the instructions in the "Prep Guide For use Before
Using Malware ...." and here are the results below. DeFogger ran OK, DDS ran OK, but clicking on

GMER didn't give me the chance to uncheck the settings as requested & it auto ran. When it

completed with a rootkit message, I seleced No & unchecked IAT/EAT and scanned and after about a

minute the system crashed with a blue screen "A problem has been detected & Windows has been shut
down to prevent damage .....etc"

After a reboot I ran GMER again successfully. (The only difference was the first time around
I was online and the Task Manager was running; the second time not. Anyway, here are the results:

Appreciate any help I can get.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Myrti,

I'm not sure yet whether I want to format my hard drive; it is the final option though.

Regarding connection to the internet; this has been minimal since I first suspected I had
a virus. Most of the time the cumputer is on I have been closely scrutinizing
processes in the task manager and occasionally zapping one that looked suspiciously
persistently active (usually one of many copies of svchost.exe).

With nothing to lose, I downloaded Combofix & ran it without problems, although I was
not able to disable McAfee Anti Virus first. Believe me, I tried.

Anyway, Combofix found 2 "infections" in explore.exe & winlogon.exe & supposedly fixed them.

Here is the contents of ComboFix.txt:

Myrti,

I'm not sure if I should be doing anything more to my computer since I ran Combofix &
posted the log file on 11/17. Both IE & Firefox seem to run fine now w/o any redirects.
I did also download & ran HiJack This & Spybot Search & Destroy & neither of them found
any problems.

Hi,

I'm sorry for the delay. Work caught me up unexpectedly.

How is the PC doing? Did the redirects stop?

regards myrti

Hi Myrti,

The redirects stopped after I ran Combofix as I mentioned in my previous post.
Anything more I should do or check?

Hi,

I would like to run an online scan with Eset to check for possible leftovers:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Myrti,

I'm busy running ESET at the moment. I will be able to post the
log on Friday as I will be away for the next few days.

Myrti,

As ESET had not finished scanning on Tues am, I let it run while I was away.
At that point, it had found 5 copies of "Win32/Bamital.EQ trojan".

However, there was a power outage while I was away, so nothing to see when I got back.
I reran ESET last night, and this time it did not find anything??

It did report the following files as being quarantined. Are these not the files that
were quarantined by Combofix that ESET is finding?

c:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP9\A0011174.exe
c:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP9\A0011176.exe
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\explorer.exe.vir
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winlogon.exe.vir
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Server\hlp.dat

Hi,

yes they are. They are not part of an active infection. This folder is a leftover of Bamital however, please delete it: c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Server

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u22-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:

  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.

  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
