Posted 08 November 2010 - 07:20 AM

This is in regards to my mother's computer. I tried to remove malware for over a month without success. She had Vista SP2. Bought Webroot Antivirus with Spy Sweeper CD, it did not find anything, and neither did all the free scans I tried. I tried to reinstall Vista with her Gateway Operating System Disc. That did not work. Bought Windows 7 64 bit OEM. Followed instructions on this site for clean install. Had a couple/few screens come up that were not in the guide, but, as far as I could tell, I did it properly. This was about a week ago. After Win 7 installation, I put in the Webroot CD and plugged in router to get Webroot updates. At this point I became suspicious that malware is still on her PC. I got mad, disconnected the router, and left PC. Back again now, posting here. Also, my mom just told me last night that she DID get a popup telling her she was infected and to do a scan (before I found out about malware over a month ago). She said she clicked to perform a scan, it said it found 2 items, and then she said she didn't do anything else because it asked for money. I believe this is how she became infected.

I ran GMER but it said it didn't find anything, so no log. However, when I went to uncheck the boxes you ask to uncheck before scanning, I noticed hardly any were checked to begin with. I was trying to make it exactly like your example picture. I will attach the screenshot. Not sure if it was supposed to be like that since it differed from your picture.

I am very grateful for any help you can provide. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Problems since reformat are significantly reduced, but computer sometimes freezes, programs stop responding, computer makes loading noises that go on for a long time for seemingly no reason. Also, the mouse will dart across the screen sometimes.

Hi,

your logs are looking clean. Gmer won't run because it is not 64bit compatible. So it is not surprising you couldn't get the log to look like it should.
Talking about compatability, which version of Webroot do you have? Not all will run smoothly on 64bit. What exactly are the problems? Slowness and noises? What kind of noises, could we be talking about a hardware issue?

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Thanks for checking it out. It seems to be running OK, I think I was just paranoid because I had tried so many different things to remove the malware and ultimately I had to reformat. This computer has always been kinda slow, it's nothing new, honestly. The noise...I can't really describe it other than to say that it's the same noise it makes when it's 'loading'. It's just that sometimes it does it a lot. I'm thinking it has to do with having more than one user logged on to Windows. I stopped doing that and that seems to have fixed that problem. Thanks again!

One question...is there any way of knowing which trojan I had? The fake 'scan' my mom did was called digiscan. Does that tell you anything? I'd just like to have a name to all my troubles.

Oh, the Webroot is Antivirus with Spy Sweeper version 7.0.4.127. It seems to be working...it's blocked some adware.

Hi,

I'm sorry I must have missed your lsat reply.

I am not seeing anything obvious from your logs and since you have reformated there should be no leftovers. Digiscan doesn't ring a bell either I am sorry to say.

If you keep having issues with slowness and weird noises I'd definitely advise checking out the hardware section to see if they can find anything wrong with your PC.
