Ok, something is wrong.

After running ComboFix my AV (Avira Free) does not update. I uninstalled it.

Windows XP SP3 Pro (Updated)
Malwarebytes (Updated and passed a scan in Safe Mode with network access, result clean)
Sandboxie 3.50
Uninstalled Daemon Tools (god, it took me long to uninstall sptd.sys)
No realtime AV, now.

ComboFix detected kernel32.dll as infected and supose fixed it.
inst.exe infected (which I think is a false positive)

Attached ComboFix.txt

Now I see strange things in "Drivers which are not Plug and Play". I have a spanish OS so I've just translated. One is catchme which I think is from ComboFix.

gmer always hangs. No log.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

My main concern, is that ComboFix detected 2 infected files. One, inst.exe, which I consider a false positive (it should be fixed). Two, kernel32.dll, it might of been infected. If something infected kernel32.dll it might still be there...

Since using ComboFix, I have a jumpy mouse, as if something was working in the background.

Since I posted, I have installed Avira Free last version and fully updated, since I couldnt remain without some sort of protection.

One thing I've found:
[ActiveScan] ID={a lot of numbers}
This is in win.ini. All the informtion I've found indicates its from Panda's ActiveScan. Can I delete this using sysedit?? I dont like having any kind of leftovers from previous software installations. By the way Panda ActiveScan found nothing.

I've executed OTL.exe twice. The first time without pasting what you told me, so I repeated the action. The first time OTL.txt and Extra.txt were created, but the second time with the pasting in the custom scan box only OLT.txt was created. So I only have OTL.txt since I deleted Extra.txt before the second scan.

Hi,

please upload kernel32.dll to virustotal:
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the mentioned file, then click Submit.

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

When ComboFix detected kernel32.dll and inst.exe, that was the first thing I did. Both results in both webpages (Virustotal and jotti) did not find anything.

Hi,

could you please post the log for kernel32.dll, I am interested in the MD5, that should be showing there.

The thing is, I've uninstalled ComboFix and by doing this, the quarantine folder has disappeared with the suposedely infected files. inst.exe is easy to recreate because it installs with VSO software. The software I use are CopyToDVD and ConvertXToDVD.

I've installed ComboFix again to see if the program detected kernel32.dll again but I think nothing has been found.

I can pass you the MD5 of the kernel32.dll I have now, just tell me from which folder. I've attached the Combofix.log. I still have combofix installed. Can I uninstall it?

Thanks.

Hi,

no, I just wanted to make sure, that the kernel32.dll you currently have is fine. Even if a file is not malicious, it can still be broken.

ComboFix may detect such a broken file as infected. So my primary concern was to make sure that the file you have is a healthy file. If it is not getting detected, it should be fine though.

Please run a scan with Eset to check for leftovers:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Please uncheck "remove found threats"

Sorry for not answering sooner.

No threats found with Eset OnlineScan.

What about [ActiveScan] ID={a lot of numbers}, can I remove it from win.ini? I've seen lots of cases where people have this in win.ini (searched through Google), but none of them says anything about removing it.

What about the false positive inst.exe? How does this get fixed? Any way of submission to fix it?

inst.exe is used to install pattin couffin driver. Link

Any more steps to find rootkits (if there is anything it has to be a rootkit, AV's are not good against rootkits) or malware? Why does gmer (for that matter my PC) freeze when using it? I have to reboot manually when using it.

Thanks.

Hi,

I don't think this particular error is going to get fixed. I'll let the developer know, but normally you shouldn't be dropping files directly into that folder, instead they should get in their own dedicated folder. This is behaviour normally solely seen by malware.
Since this seems to be a temporary file in addition, I believe there is no harm in removing it, but a lot of malware may get removed by targetting it.

The Active Scan line should belong to Panda, I believe you can just delete it, I have never done so myself though.

gmer does not work on all PCs, please try running rooktit unhooker instead:
Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

You're probably right it shouldn't drop files there, but it shouldn't be flagged as malware if it isn't too.

Hi,

it is not flagged as malware, it is deleted. That's two pair of shoes.

The log is clean. Do you have a particular reason to believe you might be infected with a rootkit? Or did you just in general want to be sure?

Hi,

it is not flagged as malware, it is deleted. That's two pair of shoes.

Not sure what you meant there... but it's not normal to have safe files deleted

The log is clean. Do you have a particular reason to believe you might be infected with a rootkit? Or did you just in general want to be sure?

Right now, I don't remember why I passed ComboFix the first time, I think I was just surfing and reading and decided to use it. It wasn't the first time I used it. Then, I supose, became preocupied because it detected 2 infected files. I thought, if it detected 2 infected files, it's because I'm infected with malware (or maybe because at some time I was).

Then I noticed strange behaviour coming from my computer. ComboFix had modified some of my settings.

Conclusion:
Learnt new stuff while investigating. Polished a bit more my general computer settings. And final but not least, supose I don't have any malware on my computer.

Lets see if the developer of ComboFix changes its behaviour related to inst.exe.

Anyhow, thanks for your help. It's been much appreciated and I've learnt a lot. :clapping:

P.S.: I have Rootkit Unhooker still installed and OTL.exe (don't know if it's created any files on my PC while executed). Any special way to remove (uninstall) them. Rootkit Unhooker, I supose like any other program (and my methods to remove remanants).

Why do you want to delete OTL and the remnants of the other tools then? Those files are perfectly safe too?

That's why we encourage everybody only to run the scan when someone familiar with the tool asks you to. Cause we know which entries are worrisome and what is normal and expected behaviour.

Anyhow, thanks for your help. It's been much appreciated and I've learnt a lot. :clapping:

It's been my pleasure too :)

P.S.: I have Rootkit Unhooker still installed and OTL.exe (don't know if it's created any files on my PC while executed). Any special way to remove (uninstall) them. Rootkit Unhooker, I supose like any other program (and my methods to remove remanants).

Yes, please have a read through this info, uninstalling ComboFix should restore your settings as well:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  • Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
