Hello,

I originally posted on the 'Am I Infected' section of the forum, ran a couple of scans as instructed, and was referred here. The thread in question is here if needed: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic358501.html#entry2007239

The problem I have is with google (and other) search queries being redirected to ad sites. I'm also getting windows explorer crashing and restarting often. Also my computer will not restart properly - it hangs around on the shutdown screen for a while before 'cutting off', the reboot always says that Windows did not shut down tidily.

Anyway, I was asked to follow steps 6-9 in "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help".

I have the DDS logs which are attached as requested. I couldn't get GMER to finish, it crashed the computer 3 times in a row.

Thanks in advance for your time.

-Tom

Thanks for your reply. Logs are posted below. Only problems I had were that Unhooker crashed my computer on the first attempt, but worked after a restart. Also Windows Explorer stopped working and restarted a couple of times on opening the programs.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi,

Combofix log pasted below. Took two attempts to finish, first time it froze on stage 50. Got the "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion" message, so restarted. Looks like it did some fix with windows explorer, but google is still redirecting.

Thanks,

Tom

Blitzblank.

Download BlitzBlank and save it to your desktop. Open Blitzblank.exe

  • Click OK at the warning (and take note of it, this is a VERY powerful tool!).
  • Click the Script tab and copy/paste the following text there:
CopyFile:
c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.22298_none_51e4f8c7931bd1e1\explorer.exe c:\windows\explorer.exe
  • Click Execute Now. Your computer will need to reboot in order to replace the files.
  • When done, post me the report created by Blitzblank. you can find it at the root of the drive Normaly C:\

Hi,

blitzbank.log copied below.

As I said in my OP, my computer has issues with shutting down properly - nothing to do with any malware i think, it's been like that for along time.

When I boot up now, I get a blank blue desktop. Seems that the only way I can open anything is through task manager.

Hi,

I assume you mean on "New Task(Run)" - typing explorer.exe in there gives me an error message - "C:\Windows\explorer.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.

Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
[/list]
