I am wondering what the video card is used for exactly on the desktop? Is it used in all browser to help playing video or only in browser that support gpgpu? Exept for desktop effect and video playing, what it is used for? When does the video card help a software to run more smoothly?

Any clue will be appreciated.

It offloads 2D and 3D Rendering of application windows from the CPU allowing the CPU to be used for more important tasks.
