I have been fighting a nasty rootkit for a couple of weeks. Had one some time back and combofix repaired it up nicely, but this one is really hanging on. I've been tinkering with Malwarebytes, Avast, etc. to no avail to remove it.

I've attached DDS logs, trying to get a full GMER log. I was able to run GMER once, didn't capture the log (although it had a lot of indications of rootkit activity) - now when I run it, it just hangs. Suspect the rootkit is preventing it from running at this point. The log I've attached so far comes from after the warning of potential rootkit activity, but before a scan, which is when it usually locks up.

Symptoms of the malware have been sudden prompts from Avast of web activity that has been blocked (when I reconnect to the network, even without IE access). Also had a fake "Microsoft Security Essentials" alert that turned in to some fake antivirus malware. It was a bear to get out from this one because it wouldn't let me boot. Malwarebytes keeps finding stuff, but it seems like it keeps coming back. And most of the time, I need to hold the power button down to get the system to shut off.

Any help, including ideas for getting a full GMER log for you, would be appreciated.

Regards and many thanks in advance.

Hello ,
And :welcome: to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.

Thanks in advance for your help Elise.

Description of problem:
  • Suspected rootkit malware.
  • Computer is slow to boot. Spends a bit more time than usual on the "Windows XP" screen. Once the desktop appears, computer is slow to load all its services (as a matter of fact, startup sound even takes about 2 minutes to be heard once the desktop appears).
  • Computer never shuts down. Starts the shutdown sequence, but hangs on a blank blue screen with some disk activity. Have to hold power down to get it to shut off.
  • When connected to the internet, browser windows randomly open. Avast frequently warns of web activity. I have left it disconnected from the internet.
  • Got stuck at one point with some fake "Windows Security Alert" that was very difficult to disable.
  • Appearance of some "Whitesmoke Translator" software within my programs list.
  • Some malware removal/antivirus software will not run. Hijack This reports various errors on scan, GMER hangs during scan, Combofix won't run unless renamed.
  • Avast and Malwarebytes reported some suspicious files and quarantined them when scanned early on during the infection.

I'll stop using the computer unless you specifically ask me to do something with it.

Logs and a run of Rootkit Unhooker on their way.

Looks indeed like a TDL4 infection, but RKU is not detecting it.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Please run the following.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

The initial run of combofix did not go so well. I got tons of error messages to the effect of, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file"... for files like 32788R22FWJFW\n.pif and hidec.exe. I aborted, renamed combofix to iexplore.exe (as I had seen in other posts - sorry for deviating from protocol here).

When I use the renamed version, it starts up a lot cleaner (no missing file errors), but I do get a "Windows Explorer needs to restart" message before the combofix stages start and during stage 3. Even so, combofix keeps going. When it goes to reboot, I have to manually power it down (one of my symptoms is that the system never powers down on its own) and combofix keeps going upon reboot.

combofix.txt is as follows:

I haven't connected it back to the internet for a while, so I can try to do that to see if it's any better.

Some things that still definitely aren't right:
  • Computer still doesn't shut down on its own. After the "system is shutting down" messages, goes to blank desktop then sits there for an infinite period of time. Requires me to shut it down manually with the power button. Nothing recorded in the event log that I could find.
  • Computer is a little slow to start Windows.
  • Cannot access Windows Security Center from the task bar - brings up errors about rundll32.exe not being accessible.
  • Seem to be getting tons of errors about permissions accessing items (like the example above).
I'll reconnect it to the internet and see if the popups have stopped.

Thanks.

Worth mentioning...

AVAST quarantined a number of files at the onset of this issue:
aec.sys
asyncmac.sys
atmarpc.sys
bthenum.sys
bthmodem.sys
bthpan.sys
pciide.sys
msvideo.dll

At the time, I had extracted versions of these from the WIN XP SP3 CD, but I could never find aec.sys. When I open device manager (can't access it directly), I noticed that the kernel acoustic echo canceller is indicated with a "!". Wondering if this could be related to shutdown issues.

Please click Start Run, type sfc /scannow and press enter. Let the disk check run unhindered. Note - you may be prompted for your XP CD.

Let me know if you notice any change after that.

Ran it, don't notice much difference. Still can't access Security Center from the task bar. Also can't access Device Manager (mmc.exe) from the System Properties menu either. "May not have the appropriate permissions" errors.

SFC replaced the following according to the event viewer:
  • c_936.nls
  • pciidex.sys

About to connect up to the internet, wish me luck.

Please run this.

We need to scan the system with this special tool:

* Please download and save:

Junction.zip

* Unzip it and place Junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
* Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Running it now... I've got a blank cmd window and a lot of disk activity. I'll assume it's running for a while.

Connected back up to the internet last night with no issues - no pop-ups or anything - but these other operating system issues remain.

Thanks!
