I have visited this site for a long time and it has been a valuable asset in helping to keep my machines clean. I've never registered before because I know y'all are very busy and I didn't want to register just to say thanks. The information you give out and the tools you provide are excellent and you should be commended! Now I've run across something I can't kill and need some help.

I've been running AVG for several years but in the last year it has let several 'driveby downloaders' through so I thought I would do something different. I uninstalled AVG and started using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). I don't know if that was a good idea or not. I got a notification 3 days ago from MSE that a threat was detected and I should 'clean my machine'. While cleaning the machine a message popped up asking me to send one of the files to Microsoft (which I understand does happen). I clicked to send to MS and almost immediately another window popped up asking me to download MS's new software to clean the machine. I know I'm smarter than that but ..... Like an IDIOT I clicked the button and *&%^%$%$ ThinkPoint downloaded.

I figured out how to deal with ThinkPoint but ..... I don't know if I didn't get all of it OR I've never really, totally cleaned off the other driveby downloader(s) I've gotten.

I am running XP as the OS. I have MalwareBytes, SuperAnti-Spyware and MSE. Unfortunately I downloaded and ran ComboFix BEFORE I read here that y'all didn't want me to do that. I have a complete backup of my machine from just AFTER I ran ComboFix. ComboFix did tell me it detected TLD3 rootkit activity. After running ComboFix I followed up with MalwareBytes and it found and 'cleaned' 18 infections. The machine is still not right.

Ok, there's the sordid tale. Here are the logs. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Oh, one other thing. I'm having to post this from another computer because when I try to come to this site my browser crashes.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Morning Gringo!

Since I posted the first set of logs my computer got too bad to work with so yesterday I put in my backup from the 4th of November. It is a Ghost backup and was done immediately after I had installed and ran Combofix.

Per your instructions I ran DeFogger, DDS and RKUnHooker; here are the 3 logs. I experienced no problems but I did have to use Google Chrome to get to BC because IE is being blocked "IE cannot display this page ..."

On Edit: Google Chrome was blocked from making this post. I am using a different computer.

Hello

You say that this is from right after you ran combofix, but i want you to run it again and send me the report

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo,

Ok, I tried to run the copy of ComboFix I downloaded last week but it said it was out of date so I chose not to run that one. I snagged a new one off the links you gave me and ran that.

It didn't run long then I got a warning box which read;

>>>WARNING!!

The Master Boot Record is infected!!

Make sure your antivirus programs are disabled

before clicking 'Ok'<<<

I had MSE turned off so I ran it. While running ComboFix popped up a box which read;

>>>Rootkit Activity Detected<<<

I clicked on OK for a reboot. When it came back up it reported it deleted a file. The first test will be to see if it lets me post this log.

Here's the ComboFix Log;

Gringo,

Since posting the ComboFix log above I have;

Been able to update MSE when I haven't been able to in the past couple of weeks

Been able to get 4 updates from MS, at their website, 2 of which were security fixes

Opened multiple windows on my browser with no redirection

Searched for various things and clicked links with no redirection

I DID open a web site that I visit frequently which is a news web site. In the past it has 'seemed' that the notices came up when that web site was open but as I said I visit it a lot. When I visited it this time a bar came down on IE that said it had blocked a site from displaying content with security certificate errors .... that is the first time that has happened.

Let me know what's next. You seem to be doing an outstanding job!! :thumbup2:

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\Uvhayx

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Gringo,

I didn't realize ComboFix would immediately start running after dropping the script on it. So, I don't know if this will have any affect on the results but I didn't have MSE turned off. When I saw that ComboFix was going to run I turned off MSE as quickly as I could. I think it got turned off before the scan ....

No problems with the script or CF running and there was no reboot of the computer. I'm running the machine now to see if I can find any problems. None so far but ....

Here's the log as requested;

Gringo,

One other thing I forgot to mention. I downloaded an excelerator for my video card a long time ago. It put an icon in my sys tray that is red and says 'ATI' on it. Everytime I run CF it disappears but after a reboot it comes back up. Think this may be an issue?

Thanks,
KC

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 7.1.0
Ask Toolbar
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Install Java:

Please go here to install Java

  • click on the Free Java Download Button
  • click on Agree and start Free download
  • click on Run
  • click on run again
  • click on install
  • when install is complete click on close

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

I'm working through this right now. My next steps are to run MBam and HJT. While I'm doing that I wanted you to know that while trying to download Adobe I got a couple of errors. Here are screen shots;

Edit; The site won't let me use that image extension but I can assure you the links are safe.

http://www.palmerrealestate.com/spa/index.php?ss=off&action=displayBig&iteminfo=solo|adobe_error.jpg

That is the first one I got. I tried to run it a second time and actually saw the box to deselect Google. Here is the second attempt;

http://www.palmerrealestate.com/spa/index.php?ss=off&action=displayBig&iteminfo=solo|adobe_error_2nd_try.jpg

I'll run MBam now and d/l and run HJT. Logs will probably be tomorrow before I can get them to you.

Muchas Gracias Amigo!
:thumbsup:

Gringo,

I was able to make it back to the office tonight. I have done almost everything. I still need to d/l and install the .pdf reader and I'll do that tomorrow. For right now I thought it more important to get you the logs of the scans. The machine is noticably faster at this point but I can tell it still has a few bugs ... or maybe not. Mbam found 4 infections.

I have unintstalled the requested programs

I have reinstalled Java and cleaned the cache

I have d/l'ed and ran TFC

I have ran a scan with Mbam and HJT. Below are the logs. I will check for a response at home here in a few minutes.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, What MBAM found is ok they are a backup folder and system restore, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WrtMon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtMon.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RoxWatchTray] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\11.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray11.exe"

Gringo,

Morning! Here's where I am;

I d/l'ed and installed FoxIt. I made SURE to untick the Ask Toolbar boxes and I'll be danged if it didn't install the toolbar on IE anyway!

I deleted all instances of Adobe Reader but .... should I leave the Adobe Flash 10 ActiveX, Adobe player plugin and Adobe SVG Viewer 3.0?

I ran HJT and removed all from startup you suggested.

When I go to the Eset scanner it hangs. In one instance I got a memory error. In the second I clicked the 'x' to close the new window but it told me the program was not responding. I restarted the machine and tried a third time. I got to Eset, clicked on the Online Scan button, the new window opened and I waited several minutes. Finally the new window closed and the Eset main page came up saying "IE closed this to protect your computer ..."

Ok, what now? Thanks again!

KC
