I clicked on a link sent in an email by my brother. It contained a trojan and perhaps more. My computer then sent the same email to everyone in my email contact list through Yahoo. I ran Malwarebytes, McAfee free version antivirus and AVG free version antivirus. Malwarebytes said it quarantined and deleted many things, including: Trojan.BHO, Rogue.malwarecrush, TrojanVundo, TrojanFakeAlert, Backdoor.IRCBot, Roguemultiple, and tons of adware. After running Malwarebytes again, it came up with 0 threats.

AVG antivirus log showed a trojan with the name Sheriff in it, which I can no longer see in a log. It also found: Trojan Horse Generic19.BWSH, Trojan Horse Downloader Agent2.ACJY, Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic_c.FQP, Trojan Horse Generic16.CMGJ, Trojan Horse Generic12.BKLQ, Trojan Horse SHeur2.ORG, Trojan Horse Agent.BAAH. I told it to clean these infections but I don't know what actually is still residing on the computer. I will paste the logs below as requested:

============= FINISH: 21:55:42.86 ===============

I don't know what it means to "bump" a topic. I hope it doesn't mean replying to my original post. I just want to make sure that eventually someone will help me. My computer continues to send infectious links to everyone in my address book almost daily. I desperately need someone's help to fix this issue. I think it's malware crush because that keeps coming up on my daily virus/malware scans. How long should I wait before expecting someone to help? I'm trying to be patient, but it's been a week. Is this an average time? In the past when I've had issues, someone has responded back no later than 1 day. I just want to make sure you haven't forgotten about me.
Tamara

EDIT: There are over 350 unanswered topics in this forum at present and the current average wait time to receive help is over a week. But you will be helped soon. ~BP

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • extract RKUnhooker to your desktop
Note** it is zipped up in a .rar file - If you do not have a program to unzip this type of file
you can get a free one from here - http://www.7-zip.org/
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.logs from DDS
2.log from RKUnHooker
3.let me know of any problems you may have had

Please don't close me out! I'm here! I had the computer off all weekend since it keeps sending out virus links. I see your post above and will begin doing everything that you've asked as soon as I get off work and get home to the computer.
Thank you!

Okay, I've done everything that you asked and I'm attaching the logs. Since my original post, the computer keeps sending out emails to everyone in my address book with just a link to click on--just like I originally got from my brother.

I wasn't sure if you wanted me to attach the files or copy and paste all of them. You said to copy the contents of both logs and post, so I'm doing that.

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.
IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT

Hello

Okay, I've done everything that you asked and I'm attaching the logs. Since my original post, the computer keeps sending out emails to everyone in my address book with just a link to click on--just like I originally got from my brother.
I want you to change the password for your email accounts - they hack those all the time I have even had mine hacked

Just posting the reports will be fine

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I downloaded combofix and disabled the antivirus software (AVG ver. 8.5 free) as it said in the link you provided. However, when I went to run combofix, it said I needed to uninstall AVG or there could be problems. I tried to uninstall it, but it is unable to complete the uninstall. I get an error message that says: Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key...

It provided a link for help but the page couldn't be found. Suggestions for what to do next?

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool

You may install this antivirus while we are working and until we are done and then if you wish you may reinstall AVG - Antivir PersonalEdition Classic

I'm typing this from another computer because the infected one is still running ComboFix... I was able to remove the AVG software and run ComboFix. It rebooted the computer and now has the little blue screen back up. It says "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished. The cursor is a combination pointer/hourglass. It has been this way for quite some time. I have to go to bed... I can't wait for it any longer. I will check it first thing in the morning and hope it is showing me a report. If it's still stuck this way, what do I do?

Just got up. Laptop was still stuck in the same state. Had to hard crash it. When this computer reboots, it comes up with a message that says: mm_tray.exe unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because MFC71U.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

The computer had this problem before trying to fix it. So now ComboFix is shut down. Do you want me to try to re-run it? I will take the laptop to work with me--it actually belongs to my secretary and I'm trying to fix it for her since she is computer illiterate. That way I can watch for your posts during the day.

Also, when it reboots, I get a message in the system tray that "your computer might be at risk. AVG Antivirus is turned off." If we uninstalled it, how does it know to mention AVG? I don't see it installed any longer--but does that mean there is a reminant of it somewhere?

Hello

AVG don't uninstall very well and thier removal tool is just a little better

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.
