I don't believe in free rides so I'll gladly tip (via paypal) whoever can resolve this promptly, thanks!

Background:
Had the hotfix.exe virus recently.
(blocked regedit, task manager and any .exe's. I went to taskmanager's folder, renamed it, ran it and deleted hotfix.exe, then was able to use hijack/malware bytes in safe mode to delete the hotfix entry from registry)
Computer worked fine for a month or two after that.

Situation:
But am having some new symptoms.
a) tried to open a site in firefox or click a link from a search result and was taken to another site instead. Couldn't tell you which, I closed it immediately.
Only happens once in a while - maybe once a day.
B) site loading times, downloads and movies (off youtube for example) are VERY slow.
c) noticed mshta.exe in task manager - sometimes 20-30 instances of it.

But, luckily, nothing is preventing .exe's or browsing, so seems mild so far.

(and yes, before you point it out, torrent software is on the machine. yes, I should remove it. no, it's not the cause of this problem - I hadn't run it in gawd-knows-how-many months before these latest attacks happened.)

When others posted similar problems I've noticed that OTL and Rootkit Unhooker logs were requested immediately.
So I'll go ahead and post all three of those here in case the additional information is useful, thanks.

(I'm attaching the Extra.txt report from OTL vs. pasting it in because every time I try to paste it in and hit Save I get a connection error. File too large?)

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.

Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.

Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

What, in the logs I posted, lead you to the exact name of the infection?

I didn't have any problems with the combofix scan.

I haven't noticed any change yet in performance/behavior - I have only used the PC to run combo fix.

Greetings

What, in the logs I posted, lead you to the exact name of the infection?

!!!!!!!!!!!Hidden driver: 0x8A2E7AEA ?_empty_? 1302 bytes
!!!!!!!!!!!Hidden driver: 0x8A2D9128 ?_empty_? 0 bytes

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Driver::
lbjhfha

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6092
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

When I try this ComboFix reports that symantec antivirus corporate is active.

[It says click OK to continue at your own risk.
Well... I don't suppose I want to continue, but there's no other option presented.
????
So I click the "close" (X) button at the top-right corner of the pop-up.
It then continues to run anyways.
It gives another warning saying essentially the same thing (and again not providing another option).
So when I "close" that one it tries to open the blue combofix window and I instantly close that.
Then it stops. Not the most intuitive interface.]

Anyways, I don't see symantec in the task tray over on the lower right.
In fact, after running the programs as you directed, I don't see anything over there except for LAN, Volume, and the option to remove hardware.
I went into Symantec Antivirus and chose Configure, then unchecked "enable" on each of the 4 or 5 auto-protect features (email, lotus, system, etc).
Then I closed symantec and tried ComboFix again (with your custom script).
Same results so I shut it down.

How do I temporarily disable symantec?

On a related note, even though I had used the system tray (right-click/disable option) to temporarily shut it down when we started this process because of the direction to do so in the "preparation guide", it has obviously been re-enabled during all of the restarts these programs have caused. Though I haven't seen it in the system tray, I noticed that it ran its regularly scheduled system scan in the middle of the night last night.

Here is the text version of the .csv file report from symantec saying it found these backdoor trojans and that it left them alone (for whatever reason). I thought this might be important information for you to use. I tried to attach the csv file but the forums didn't allow it.

thanks

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

FBI Cyber Education Letter
File sharing infects 500,000 computers

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 8.2.5
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

this is mbam log. next reply will be Hijack this.
I couldn't perform the following instructions because when MBAM was through with the scan it simply opened the log in notepad. There was no option to "show results".
---------------------------
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
# Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

this is the hijack log below.
note that i haven't been using the computer for anything else so I can't answer your questions about its current state or performance.
I will say that downloading adobe reader took an hour. This makes me think the computer is still downloading extremely slowly.

And I've noticed in task manager that there are 8 or so instances of svchost.exe.
I don't know if that's normal or not.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LVCOMSX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DLBXCATS] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\DLBXtime.dll,_RunDLLEntry@16
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WD Drive Manager] C:\Program Files\Western Digital\WD Drive Manager\WDBtnMgrUI.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nView\nwiz.exe /installquiet
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DivXUpdate] "C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Update\DivXUpdate.exe" /CHECKNOW
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
      O4 - Global Startup: ActivClient Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\ActivIdentity\ActivClient\acsagent.exe
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install

Logs look very good?

I just had symantec pop up again and alerted me to this again:
Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf File Left alone CHARLES Work C:\System Volume Information\_restore{2016B9B5-A51A-4673-8ADC-C6875FC239A3}\RP18\ Infected C:\System Volume Information\_restore{2016B9B5-A51A-4673-8ADC-C6875FC239A3}\RP18\ Clean virus from file Quarantine infected file Scheduled scan The file was left unchanged.

isn't that a problem? Or is ESET Online going to remove it?

C:\System Volume Information\_restore - this is system restore and is harmless unless you do a manual restore and we will clean them out as part of the last step

and yes your logs are looking very good.

Please let me have the eset report when complete

I keep trying to run eset and it won't work.
I click start scan and it says waiting... then when the progress bar completes (which takes 5-10 minutes) it says I need to install or enable active X. I click install. Then the progress bar (at the lower left of internet explorer) says waiting for eset.htmlblahblahblah... and nothing ever changes. 10 minutes later, it's still sitting there.
