I want several Icons to work on Win7. On XP I use several Icons to make it easier keep track of Folders and not need to read what it says under the folders. It is difficult to find a way to use Icons on Win7. I have been using Icons from ICONS.DLL and PIFMGR.DLL. I cannot use these Icons in Win7. I can use Foods and Cartoons Icons. These are not what I had in mind. I checked SHELL32.dll and imageres.dll and both seem to be part of Windows. I do not see anything in there that fits what I want. I have Googled Icons and also do not find much of what I want. Icons.dll and pifmgr.dll in XP is closer to what I want. I do not know how to find anything even close, like that, to working on WIN7. I would appreciate any help.

Well, if you have access to a computer with XP installed, you could copy the icons.dll and pifmgr.dll files over to your Win7 box, and use them.

I have done the reverse of this before, and it worked (copying shell32.dll and imageres.dll to an XP machine).

I have copied DLL files from XP to Win7. I used a USB unit to copy them. They do not work. A notice lists PIFMGR.dll has no Icons. I have not gone from Win7 to XP.

Take a look at some of these http://www.iconarchive.com/category/folder-icons.html
You can download one or many.
Right click on the folder you want to change, choose properties, then click 'customize tab', change icon. Browse for the one you want.
The extension you need is .icon

Hmm...I just tried pifmgr.dll on my Windows 7 machine, and got these:

Here's how I did it:

Copied the pifmgr.dll (from XP) to my Desktop on Windows 7. Make a shortcut to the command prompt (cmd), right-click > Properties > Change icon > Browse > navigate to the location of pifmgr.dll (my Desktop) > double-click pifmgr.dll

And all those icons where there to choose from.

Also, there is a program called ResourcesExtract that extracts the icons from dll files to use as regular .ico's (not dll's anymore).

KeyboardNinja, I tried cmd Properties on my Win7 computer and got nowhere. I tried ResourcesExtract and got nowhere. I am probably doing something wrong. I do not know what.

Can you outline and describe in detail (like I did) the steps you took?

If it comes down to it, I can upload the .ico's to my Skydrive if it's that important to you.

I tried pifmgr.dll and icons.dll on the cmd properties and it comes back to me saying that there are no icons in them. ResourcesExtract did nothing.

I don't have an icons.dll file in Windows/system32 on my XP box.

I just have hticons.dll and moricons.dll

Where did you find icons.dll?

Well, I don't have icons.dll, so I can only give you the contents of pifmgr.dll.

I'll send you a PM with the link.

I have icons.dll on my computer  It is an IrfanView (an image viewer program) plugin using which you can set icons for image files.
You can download full plugin pack from IrfanView and it will install the Icons.dll file in the Plugins folder of IrfanView. Or you can download individual community Icons.dll files like this one.

I downloaded and installed IrfanView but I cannot use it. I searched for the folder with icons under .Dll and I did not find it with IrfranView. If IrfanView does not do anything with icons under .Dll then it is useless for me.
