Hello all,

I've got a problem child computer. Any search in a web browser will redirect to ad sites, but if I type the url of a website in the address bar it will go to the specified website. Outlook Express won't connect to the POP3 server. Pinging the POP3 server also fails. Getting the IP address of the POP3 server from a different computer and adding it to the hosts file didn't make any difference either. I removed the addition to the hosts file after that test. Malwarebytes (free version) didn't detect anything.

DDS.txt posted inline. Attach & ark compressed and attached.

Thank you for your time and assistance. It is appreciated.

Sorry about compressing the attached log files. I could have sworn I saw to do that in the instructions, but when I re-read them I didn't find that anywhere. So here are the current (yes I ran the utilities again) log files.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok,

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.logs from DDS
2.log from RKUnHooker

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for the help. BleepingComputers looks very busy this week. I hope it slows down so you can get a break. It is disabled now but I wanted you to know that DAEMON Tools Lite is installed.

The computer is getting popups to partypoker when I click on a link in Internet Explorer now.

HERE IS DDS.TXT

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.

Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.

Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

ComboFix wouldn't run the first time, so I restarted the computer and tried again. Same results. So I copied ComboFix.exe to FixCombo.exe and it would run. At/near ?"the end"? of combofix's 2nd & 3rd run it would BSOD so I haven't been able to get a report from ComboFix. I checked the root of the drive for a log but didn't find any there or on the Desktop.

But here is what I wrote down while ComboFix was running.

1st run:
Could not download Recovery Console due to the inability to resolve the domain names.
Rootkit - TDL3 detected
Make note of C:\windows\system32\sdra64.exe
REBOOT

2nd run:
Completed Stage_1 - into the forties - I hade disabled Trend Micros active protection, but when ComboFix was trying to rename and copy some system files TM complained about it. I "allowed" each one, but I don't know if everything got completed because of this.
BSOD DURING ?SHUTDOWN? I think.

Disabled all Trend Micro services
3rd run:
nothing detected
Completed Stage _1 - 50
BSOD DURING ?SHUTDOWN? I think.

The computer isn't redirecting now, but I think a driver has been damaged. When the Desktop is starting to show it seems to pause until I CTRL ALT DEL. I don't have to close any apps, just enter into the Task Manager and the Desktop finishes loading. Then I exit Task Manager.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Good morning

How many times did you run TDSkiller?

Can you try now to rerun combofix for me.

I ran tdsskiller once that I remember.

when I started ComboFix it came up with a dialog box telling me there is a newer version available. Should I update to the new version?

I didn't update ComboFix.

ComboFix found C:\windows\system32\sdra64.exe active again.

When ComboFix got to the end and says Creating Log "do not run any programs until done" or something very close to that. It BSODs. I wasn't able to get the actual BSOD message. Sorry.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

combofix run in safe mode.
Didn't find C:\windows\system32\sdra64.exe
Did BSOD at same place at the end of the first run.
rebooted into safe mode.
combofix didn't run a second time to finish anything.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...

Gringo,

Here is the ESET log file. It found the backdoor again, but I notice it's in a quarantine and in the System Restore. So it looks like it's been dealt with. I'm guessing we just need to turn off System Restore to delete all the files there and then re-enable it and create a clean Restore Point. As well as, empty the quarantine.
