Posted 26 October 2010 - 09:47 PM

My hotmail account has been sending spam to my contacts.
I shut off the PC for the entire weekend before I went out of town.
Then on a different PC:
I changed my password to random numbers, lowercase letters, upper case letters, and special characters.
I changed my secret question and changed the answer to random numbers, lowercase letters, uppercase letters and special characters.
I confirmed that there wasn't a "Safe" email to send password reset requests to. (though that would have locked me out anyway if done so that wasn't it).
I shut that PC down for the entire weekend too.
Still the emails went out while both the PCs were turned off for the weekend.
So it isn't something running on the PC doing the spam but I would like to confirm that there isn't a logger or something else running that captured the password in the first place.
Based on the password and such being changed and the emails still going I'd think that it was someone that harvested my contacts and was spoofing the sender address but looking at the email headers and tracking it back through the routers it passed through on the way to my work account, if they are doing that then they are doing it from a hotmail account somehow.
Anyway, please help if you can. Here are the logs requested in the Preparation Guide.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks! Can you tell me what lines lead you to that conclusion so that I can check the other PCs in the house for the same thing? Most are used similarly and so it is likely that at least one of the others has the same rootkit.

Hi,

the result is showing in the gmer log, but the tool has since been updated, so you wouldn't see the same lines.
I'd be happy to check the gmer logs from your other PCs and point you to the malware found there though.

Ah, I meant which lines indicate the virus?
OTL.exe?
ut9x.bat?

Hi,

it's more these entries in gmer:

.text C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe[1136] ntdll.dll!NtCreateFile 7C90D0AE 5 Bytes JMP 00E30000
.text C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe[1136] ntdll.dll!NtCreateProcess 7C90D14E 5 Bytes JMP 00E30FDB
.text C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe[1136] ntdll.dll!NtProtectVirtualMemory 7C90D6EE 5 Bytes JMP 00E3001B

The detection is not unambiguous, but together with your hacked account I'm fairly confident that you have a backdoor. The hacked account alone is a strong indication of a compromised PC.

ah, ok thanks!
I'll go ahead and clean this PC since it is really just for gaming and such, maybe I'll reformat it eventually. Afterward I'll post the gmers from the other PCs for you to check. thank you for all your help so far!

Not sure if it means anything but mcafee detects a virus on the downloaded file from link 2 above but does NOT detect a virus from link 3 above. Since they are mirrors I'd expect the same behavior but that isn't occurring.

Hi,

the first BSOD might have been intentional. Can you please go to C:\qoobox and look for combofix2.txt, if you find it please post it here.

  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
