Hello,

I should forewarn you that I know absolutely nothing about hardware. It appears my fan is going out on my laptop. It has an intermittent noise that goes away after I tap on it.

I am watching out for any changes in speed as I have read that slowdowns could signify overheating.

What else should I be doing? I've already taken the precaution of backing up all the data. I have to use this machine but I am keeping all data backed up as often as possible.

Blow compressed air down thrru the keybord above the fans. Alot of dust will come out the vents.. see if the noise stops.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Just send it to me and I promise to fix it for you (eventually!) (just kidding!) :flowers:

Seriously, try this free program to monitor your temps: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

If the system's still under warranty, get it fixed by them. If it's not, find someone who knows how to crack the case open without damaging it (and watch them do it so you know that they're not BS'ing you) and then clean the fan out good.

Looks like I caught the problem too late. I got a blue screen with some stop errors that I didn't bother writing down.

I'll deal with this later. For now, I'm going to replace it with a differrent pc for the next few days - hopefully not weeks.

Thank you for your suggestions. Domo Arigato.

As long as you haven't disabled it, the system will log Blue Screens to the event log (in your Event Viewer). Here's a link to the start of basic troubleshooting for the BSOD: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Post back with the STOP error (including the extra parameters) and we can work through it with you.
