Hello everyone!

I am brand new to this site, and I registered because I do not know where else to turn. After lots of research, I've been unsuccessful at halting a virus on my desktop computer. It is a Compaq with Windows XP (32 bit), which I purchased back in 2006. I have attempted to run scans, antispyware and antivirus, and have even had to do a destructive recovery of the system (which usually has worked in the past!), but NOTHING seems to get rid of these buggers.

I will give you some information in regards to some of the stuff I've found/noticed on my computer, and below I will post the logs that your site requested. Please respond to this message as soon as you can, as I need the desktop to do the majority of my work and am unfortunately too poor to afford a new computer.

Here are some of the things I have noticed:

1) After running an old version of AVG antispyware in safe mode, the scan found a few programs called "hijacker.small"- one of which had infected a random "music_now" folder file called inetchk.exe, and the other which seemed to infect a system restore point. I tried to delete my system restore points, as well as do a destructive recovery entirely, but new problems popped up afterward.

2) When I try to search the Internet using Google, which was my default homepage, it will re-direct me to any number of commercial links and will not let me search. I tried to use MBAM, AVG, and HijackThis to get rid of the obvious redirect infections, but all of these programs failed to work.

3) I also noticed that my homepage changed from Google to MSN. I found that to be a little weird, so I wound up doing another destructive recovery and simply not hooking the Internet up. At some point, Google also redirected me to something called "google.com/webhp." I wasn't sure about that, either. So I unhooked the Internet and decided to come to you folks!

4) At some point, I found information regarding TDDserv.sys, and how I should disable it in order to fix a Google-redirect virus infected computer. However, in my Device Manager, it seems that TDDserv.sys does not even exist. I didn't know if this was a problem, but I figure I should mention it.

Please, please, please, someone try to contact me and help me out! Below is the dds log, and I will upload the ark.txt and the attach.txt zip files. Again, be aware that I have performed these scans and produced these logs AFTER I did a destructive recovery of the system, and have not connected the computer to the Internet at all.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello!

It is quite alright, I am glad that you sent the response to help! So far, I have been working with TechSupportForums with the situation, and I have done the following: I was told to scan with ComboFix, whereby it found some issues with the computer. I was then told to run TDSSKiller, and then re-ran ComboFix in order to re-check the computer. I do not know if the computer is fixed yet (honestly, I think it still not completely fixed), but I will send the OTL report of the computer as it is right now. Look below for the reports:

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:
AVG will not let ComboFix clean your PC, hence it needs to be uninstalled first. Please do this, when prompted.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi,

please run a new scan with gmer:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!
