IE has been infected with unwanted popup ads such as Venus123, Search Inquire, Casino gaming, etc.
Also IE is running much slower than usual. I do not seem to have the problem when I use AOL except that the infection has somehow trashed AOL V9.0 (security edition), only V8.0 will work. But when I log in on IE I then experience the popup problem. I have run a HiJackThis log and it is shown below. Any help that someone may give would be greatly appreciated.

  • Be patient. HijackThis logs take some time to research.
Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues: This may or may not, solve other issues you may have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. (Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.)

Hi

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad to your desktop for easy reference. Read this instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about something

I have examined your HJT log and cannot find any traces for malware/spyware. So to make sure there is nothing there. Can you please do the following:

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Once Ewido has completed its scan can you copy/paste the log back here so i can go over it. Thanks
Mat2

Matt,
I installed Ewido and ran a complete system scan. 6 items were found. I have a list of these items and a new HiJackThis log attached below. I tried IE after the removal of the 6 items but still had an instance of an adware popup. IE is still running slow and AOL is now taking longer to initialize.
Here is the stuff. Ewido report first. GOOD LUCK.

Hi

Thanks for the logs, Your HJT Log is clean. I have one question for you. when you opened the Ewido log did it say cleaned with backup next to the entries.

The adware you are getting through your IE could be coming through a service in Xp called messenger, Not MSN messenger or Windows Messenger. I need you to download the following:

Shoot the messenger

Once downloaded, locate the program and run it, you will see the following:

Before disabling messenger

After

Now try your IE and see if the popups are still happening.

With regards to your AOL problem have you tried reinstalling Version 9.0 and running the Computer Check up, Keyword Computer Check up to see if that sorts out your AOL issues.

Also can your HJT and generate a startup list as follows:
  • Open HiJack This
  • Click Open The Misc Tools Section
  • Make sure a check (tick) mark is in List Also Minor Sections
  • Click Generate List
  • A warning Box will appear Press Yes
Once is has completed the scan, Notepad Will open with the log, Copy/paste the log back here into this thread. Let me know how you get on with this. Thanks
Mat2

Hi

I am contacting you to see if you still require the help, as i have not heard anything from you.

If you do still need help, please can you Copy/Paste a new HJT Log along with a startup list (instructions in my last Post), back here in this thread.
