--Recently I noticed w/ task manager that "services.exe" was more & more causing my cpu to run at or near 100%.

--I did some full sys. scans with Malwarebytes Antimalware, Dr. Web Cureit, and Avast. Despite a few items being "taken care of," the services.exe persists w/ high cpu.

--Only a few Java related items that were in an avast folder under Local Settings\temp were found to be bad.

--However, in both normal & safe modes Avast will not complete a full sys. scan (maybe related?). It gets hung up around 5-7% completion and the cpu runs at or near %100.

--In fact, I left Avast to scan while I was sleeping, so the cpu was running mad like that for hours on end--probably not good for the sys. either, eh?

--Below is sys info & a dds log.

--And you will notice there is no gmer log here. I have attempted to run that scan in both normal and safe mode, but (similarly to avast hanging up) the sys. freezes in the middle of the scan w/ the cpu running pretty high. Although before it freezes, it IS catching stuff (a lot in the registry it looks like), as I see when the gmer window is on the rootkit/malware tab. Thank you,

(Also, I want admin to know that although I had posted this on another help site first, I never received any help there.)

Sys info: "Windows XP Home Ed., 2002, Service Pack 3 . . . Dell Dimension 3000, Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz, 2.99GHz, 512 MB RAM"

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    hlp.dat
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi. Thanks for replying to this topic. Though my sys. is still a bit glitchy (occasional or more than I'm comfortable w/ crashing of programs), a lot of the really serious cpu problems seem to have vanished. (I had already uninstalled some potentially problematic recent programs, but it seems it took a couple system restarts to really be effective.) BUT I still would love some help cleaning/fixing whatever tough & lingering malware/viruses may remain. So the OTL log is below; however, the extras.txt file never was provided (maybe an extra box in the program needed to be checked?).

Hi,

the OTL Extras log is only created on the very first run. It seems you have run the tool before.

Please run Rootkit Unhooker instead:
Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Your logs are looking clean so far. If your problems with Avast persists, I would consider uninstalling and reinstalling it.
Does it hang at the same file every time?

um, when I tried it, neither that link nor anything from that site was connecting. . . .

also, I tried another full sys. scan w/ avast. it seemed to want to hang up around a sys. restore item, but this time the whole sys. did not freeze. so all I did was pause and unpause--and the scan continued to my surprise. It finished and only found a few items. One of them, though, avast could not move to the chest for some reason. and I'm hesitant to outright delete it b/c it looks like a windows item:

Yes, that one worked. Below are the results. . . . I think everything is looking better for the most part now. And that Avast sys. scan finally worked, so that was good.

Let me know if you see anything of concern here--and if you have any recommendations on that infected file mentioned in the previous post.

Thank you.

Hi,

it sure looks like a windows file. If you want to be sure, try to upload it here:
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the file listed above, then click Submit.

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

If only very few anti virus programs detect it, it is likely a false positive.

Thank you! Good news--none of the Jotti scanners found anything w/ that file.

Unfortunately, I can't upload those scan results. I have the free Avast version: so that's probably why when I go to the "retrieve last scan results" or whatever it's called option that it is grayed out. However, this one file that Jotti didn't find anything wrong w/ was the only problematic result of the scan. The only other infected result was for some program from ages ago that I never even used, so I just allowed Avast to delete that. And the rest were "unable to scan" results that were protected b/c they were items from Superantispyware's vault/chest.

So I guess things are looking pretty good now.

Hi,

just to be safe please run an online scan as well:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Sorry I haven't done this yet--I do really appreciate your help. . . . I've just not yet found the right time to let my sys. to do this intensive scan. . . . And now I'm soon to undertake a total hd wipe--for unrelated reasons--so I don't know how much it matters now.

Hi,

if you are going to reformat there is not much need to do the scan.
