Hey Bleeping Computer Crew,

I had contracted Security Tool a few months back and my computer has not been the same. Below are a list of my efforts to combat the problem and symptoms that my computer currently has.

My Efforts:
Regularly run Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Spybot.
Tried wiping computer but CD drive would not read my CD.
Tried reinstalling windows but am prompted with error messages.

My symptoms:
AVG Virus Scan giving error messages. Try to uninstall software but the computer doesn't recognize that it's on the hard drive.
Windows updates prompt me to download new updates. When I reboot, the updates did not successfully install and the windows update prompts me again.
When I start my computer, a black screen briefly appears with the words "INVALID boot.ini" at the top.
When I type an address into Mozilla and press "enter", the browser is not prompted to search for the webpage. I must click to get it to upload the site.

Below is my DeFogger log. See attachments for additional DeFogger and GMER logs.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jason

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image

    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs

Gringo,

Thanks for the response :)

I was able to follow the defogger instructions.

When I begun the DDS scan my computer screen turned blue displaying an error message for a split second (I think I could make out the words "Memory Dump") then restarted the computer. Tried it again after the restart but had the same issue. I will attempt this again later on to see if I can get these logs for you.

Below is my Unhooker log:

Hello

AVG right now is very hard to shut down long enough to run our scans and is actively going after some of our tools - for this reason we are going to have to remove it until we are finished

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool

You may install this antivirus while we are working and until we are done and then if you wish you may reinstall AVG - Antivir PersonalEdition Classic

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

After two tries I was able to produce the log.

When I first ran combofix I was prompted to DL some microsoft system recovery software. This produced the error message "Boot partition cannot be enumerated correctly". It asked me if I would like to proceed with the scan and I clicked yes.

It went through each stage and restarted. As it was preparing the report, the same blue error message as before flashed across the screen and restarted my computer without producing a report.

The second time I had the same prompt to DL the system recovery software, which I rejected. The scan ran fine and produced the report below. As of right now the computer is running alright but these blue error screens lead me to believe that the problem has not been fixed.

Hello

before we move on we need to fix that problem with the boot.ini

Download BootCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click BootCheck.exe to run the check
  • When complete, a Notepad window will open with some text in it
  • Save the Notepad file to your desktop as BootCheck.txt
  • Copy the contents of BootCheck.txt and post it in your next reply

Go to C:\boot.ini

If that file exists, right click and uncheck 'Read Only' and click Apply>OK

Now right click the file again and select 'Open With' and choose Notepad.

If the boot.ini doesn't exist, then open Notepad.

Copy/paste the following text in the quote box below, into Notepad

scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS=5 /fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS=6 /fastdetect
C:\WINDOWS=7 /fastdetect

Close the file, and approve the changes made when asked by Windows.

If there was no boot.ini, save the file you just created. Name it boot.ini and save it directly to C:\ drive.

Do Not reboot yet!

Run the Bootcheck.exe and post it's contents for review. It's important that you do not reboot the system until I've reviewed that log.

Ok, looks good. Read through this next set of instructions and print them out if you're not sure you'll remember.

Reboot your system

* Upon reboot, you'll have 30 seconds to choose from the boot menu.
* Use your arrow key scoot on up to 1 /fastdect in the list and press Enter
* Wait for it to boot Windows.
* If you receive an error, click OK to restart the system

* Upon restart you will see the boot menu again. Arrow up to 2 /fastdetect and press Enter.
* Wait for Windows to boot. If you receive an error message, same as before, click OK to restart.

Continue using the arrow key, going in succession from 3 /fastdetect, etc., one at a time, until Windows boots up.

Come back and tell me which # worked for you.

Good. Now that we know which partition Windows is located in, we need to set it one more time.

Right click the C:\boot.ini and rename it to boot.bak

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below, into that empty Notepad:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Save this as boot.ini directly on the C:\ drive.

Run the Bootcheck.exe and post the report contents here for review. Do not reboot until I review that text.

Good job!!

Now reboot the computer and update combofix for me and rerun it - let it install the recovery console

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.

Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
[/list]
