Hi:

I haven't been here in a while so I can't remember if I'm supposed to post here or somewhere else.

I downloaded what I thought was an update to my realplayer software this past Saturday; October 23, 2010. I did this (like an idiot it seems) because I was in the middle of using the realplayer to download a video from youtube and this box pops up and tells me that my realplayer might be corrupt and that I need to download some files and I do. The download looked really legit but then most fake stuff does
right?

The next day, Sunday October 24, 2010 I turn on my computer and I get this message that the system can find my localized settings and so it would load with some generic settings. I then restarted the computer and looked up how to find my localized folder on the hard drive and I found the folder and looked in it and found these two files that had the date 10/23/2010 4:21pm which is around the time I download those supposeded "RealPlayer" Files. The two file are

DCBC2A71-70D8-4DAN-EHR8-E0D61DEA3FDF.ini
and GDIPFONTCACHEVA.DAT

I looked up both those files and read conflicting views about whether they are okay or were actually harmful viruses.

I thought about what I had downloaded recently or what software I had installed and the answer is limewire, frostwire and the "realplayer" files. I looked in my Revo-Uninstaller to see if those realplayer files were listed and they weren't. There was an update for my realplayer when I upgraded from the old one to the current version and that was on September 30, 2010. There is no listing of the downloaded files from Saturday, October from, 2010.

I went into the localized folder today Monday, October 25, 2010 because I couldn't remember the names of the two files and while I was there I wanted to copy the file and put it onto a disk or
something...boy was that a mistake! When I got to "MY Computer" view I was missing my personal folders meaning I am missing my "DG Folders"! (See Attachment)

Can someone please help me out with this situation?

Hi:

I found the solution to my missing folder dilemma.

I am still concerned about the Realplayer files that I download as I can not find any listing of those installed files in either my Windows Add/Remove Programs or my Revo Uninstaller App.

I also noticed in the Window Add/Remove Program that it's listed that used my RealPlayer Software today, October 25, 2010 but that isn't the case. I last used my RealPlayer software on Saturday, October 23, 2010, so you can see why I'm a bit concerned about the supposed realplayer files I downloaded on Sat 10/25/2010.

I would appreciate some help with this problem very much.

Thanks,

Hi M0le:

Sorry for not getting back to you but I did wait for some assistance but then I got busy with other things. Hopefully I'm not too late and you can still give me some help.

As I mentioned before I had that stupidly downloaded what I thought was an update for Realplayer but I don't think it was because it's not listed in my Revo or Windows program installed list.

I also noticed that sometimes the size of the G drive seems to increase and then decrease without me having deleted/adding any files.

Yesterday I updated my simply super software and but when I tried to open it and run a scan (after updating) it won't open at all. The logo comes up and it seems as it's about to open and then it closes real fast. I tried right clicking (yesterday) to see if I could use it to scan a specific folder and it would open at all but today it allows me to scan a folder etc. but it still won't open to allow me to update it. :(

I actually download the free version of Dr. Web and did a scan and found a few things that could be a viruses

1. There were 2 InstallHelper.exe files
2. A0024351.exe
3. descript.ion

All of these files said that they were "probably" Dloader virus. One was renamed and the other three were moved into the Dr. Web Quarantine folder. I don't know if they are in fact are viruses but I do think that something is going on with my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, nothing you've mentioned so far is malware but let's do a quick check

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If MBAM won't update then download and update MBAM on a clean computer then save the rules.ref folder to a memory stick. This file is found here: 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' then transfer it across to the infected computer.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

And then

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Hi M0le:

I already have Malwarebytes installed and will do a full scan right after I send this message to you.

I also downloaded SuperAntiSpyware and will install it as well. I will get back to you as soon as both of the scans completes either today or tomorrow.

Thanks again for getting back to me.

Hi M0le:

Here are the two logs that you requested. Althought neither of them is showing anything I still think something is going since I can't access my Simply Super Software ie Trojan Remover to update it.

I'm kinda of confused...shouldn't I have used Hijack this or some other software to do a deep scan for issues that malwarebytes or SuperAntispyware might not find???

Please run OTL, this is the type of scanner you were asking about. HijackThis, while once an excellent tool, has fallen behind since it was sold to TrendMicro.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Everything looks good. I'm doing a clean-up below. Nothing to worry about.

Open OTL

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Hi M0le:

I copied and pasted your code to notepad and plan to run that scan as soon as I finish this message to you.

I followed your directions clicked on the link to go to the ESET website. I clicked on the ESET Online Scanner button and another window opens asking for persmission to download Active X and I allow it to be installed. Once the files are installed the ESET Online Scanner window opens and I accept the terms of agreement and click the "Start" button. The virus signatures are downloaded and then the scan starts.

Basically, the gist is that there is NO esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe software to download from this website to my desktop. I went to the download tab and while there is software to download (SysInspector.exe) it isn't the one you mentioned.

I did a web search for the software you mentioned and found this link
http://mytopfiles.com/programs/file/esetsmartinstaller_enu/336373.htm and I downloaded the .exe files from there.

I think maybe you need to update your link or either give different instructions on how to proceed otherwise people will be think they did something wrong like I did originally.

Thanks,

Hi M0le:

I did run the both scans and saved both the logs like you asked (see below). Of course I don't understand the code stuff but there are some files I didn't put onto my machine like the NOD what the heck is NOD??? I do have Winrar, mine is an old version but it's quite legitimate. I know it's important to update your virus database and I do regularly but when it comes to other than anti-virus software I'm of the mind "If you like something stick with it" so I don't make a habit of upgrading to the "newer" versions if I'm totally happy with the old one. I am upset about my Format Factory software having Win32/Adware.ADON (What the heck is that???)as I didn't think that I getting anything other than a piece of software that can convert my video/audio files into other formats. What's wrong with these companies adding spyware etc. to free software without the downloaders dang consent?!

I am totally pissed right now about the viruses that were found on my computer but I guess that's what happens when you give other people access and put trust in them not to do sneaky things on your computer.

I WON'T be doing that anymore!

I am totally pissed right now about the viruses that were found on my computer but I guess that's what happens when you give other people access and put trust in them not to do sneaky things on your computer.

Always set up a new user account and password yours.

What's wrong with these companies adding spyware etc. to free software without the downloaders dang consent?!

This is a tricky area because if the software had a EULA then you probably did consent (sort of). You're right of course, they should be upfront with the adware.

NOD is actually a legitimate program, NOD32 is ESET's antivirus. Winrar is showing legitimate but there are keygens downloaded which Winrar has copies of.

Someone on this system was trying to access cracks or a 'keygen'....this is a certain way to attract malware to your system. As well as being illegal, 'Cracks' and 'Keygens' are often associated or loaded with malware, and should be avoided (along with 'crack' sites).

Now, how is the PC behaving?

Hi M0le:

Thanks for all your help so far. :thumbup2:

The PC seems to be okay it and it's running a little faster. Don't get me wrong it was never running like a maserati race car but it was faster BEFORE those issues came about. My processor isn't one of the newer ones; it a Pentium 4 2.40 GHz and I only have 1GB of memory but hey it's better than nothing.

Anyway, I have decided to ban anyone else from using my computer some won't like it but that's just too dang bad. I also set up a password so no sneaky little buggers can access the computer when I'm not around. :nono:

Last but not least is there another test to run make sure that all the bad stuff is really gone???
