How do you clear the recently opened programs (not files) list under that start menu in windows XP via script or reg hack? I know how to do it manually and needed to deploy this out to many machines. Thank you for the help.

If I understand what you want...I simply right-click on the taskbar...select Properties/Start Menu tab...push Customize button...go to Advanced tab...and set it up the way that I want.

If you want the same settings for each system...I don't know how that would be done en masse.

Just tried all of those and I am still seeing entries under my start menu. Thanks for the post though.

If I read you right, the Key that seems to controls that under XP is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count

All apps you have run have an associated item, and a count value for the number of times they have been run by you, the list you see on the start menu is not a "recently opened programs list" but a "most popular list".

To clear the items on the menu you need to clear all but one of the values of Type REG_BINARY in the key listed above.
DO NOT delete the value HRZR_PGYFRFFVBA

Once the values have been deleted be patient and wait, as the trawling process for checking this key and updating the items in the start menu doesn't appear to be particularly quick, it has taken up to 20 seconds to clear on my PC.

Jim.

Just a reminder...before going down the registry edit path, please backup the registry.

A good tool for doing such: ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html
