Hello,
I originally posted this in the Am I Infected page, but now I realize this is the correct forum, and I have the proper logs. Here's my problem:

Upon computer start up, everything looks to be loading up fine. When I try to run a search on google, most of the time, the link redirects me to some website with an obscure URL. For the most part, I back out of this as fast as I can, so I can't get a look at the name of the URL, but they range from typical spam things like 'better search engines' to online dating sites. Eventually, I can click any link and get to the page I want, but it takes a few tries, and sometimes the problem will reoccur. Once in a while, a tab will randomly open with a spam URL already in it. Furthermore, once the computer has been on for a bit, a Just-in-Time Debugging window pops ups. From my research, it's a carbon copy of the legitimate version, but it keeps coming up despite I have debugging scripts disabled. I cannot exit out of it either, and if I remain idle at the log in screen during start up, I get a different debugging message. If I try to log in, it usually results in a blank background with no icons or toolbar.

I've made several attempts to delete this problem using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, AVG Free, Spybot, and SmitFraud. All the scans turned up something at some point, but even after deleting the viruses, the problem persists. I run Windows XP.

Here are the requested logs, and thank you for your time.

Please download and run MBR.exe by GMER:

http://www2.gmer.net/mbr/mbr.exe

It will produce a log, mbr.txt in the same directory as the program. Please copy/paste that log here.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you still want to clean it please do the following

===================
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
========
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

Okay, first up is the TDSS Log, followed by Combofix. I had to uninstall my AVG Free to run Combofix. Would you suggest I reinstall it asap, or wait until we're done? I have no other real-time scanners in place otherwise.

As far as the security of this computer, it's a personal laptop, and other than having an online banking service, there's no significant personal records (ie credit card numbers, account numbers, etc.). As per your suggestion, I did change my online banking password, and will probably be making a few calls as well. This is a 5 year old laptop, and as soon as I'm out of college, I think I will be investing in a new one.

Avg will conflict with Combofix you may go ahead and reinstall it we shouldn't need Combofix anymore.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatley.
=====
* Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.

MBAM didn't pull up anything, but the log is posted below. Eset seems to have pulled one file, though it was a music file stored on my external drive.

Things are running pretty well. The Just in Time debugging window has stopped opening, and from what I can tell, my search links aren't being redirected either. DDS took much longer than 3 minutes to scan, but I think that was largely due to the fact that I ran it after starting my computer up, and AVG was doing its usual thing. Here are the logs.

Please uninstall the following.
Adobe Reader 8.1.5
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 7

Leave the update 22 for java it is current.
You can then download the newest version of Adobe reader from here > http://get.adobe.com/reader/

=======Cleanup=======
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the Uninstall, it needs to be there.

Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used that is leftover.

After that your all set.

Let me express my deepest thanks, kahdah, for helping me through this issues. It's nice to know that there's a place like this people can turn to when nothing else works.

I tried uninstalling combofix, but once again, it wouldn't run because of AVG. Can I just delete the icon, because I really don't want to go through the hassle of uninstalling AVG again.
