I was just wondering if I reformat a hard drive and then reinstall xp from a disc that doesn't have the latest secuity updates what is the best way of going on the internet and getting the updates and installing anti virus, considering I will have to go online with no real security or at best outdated secuity to get the updates and install anti virus?
Hi carpediem12 That is a good question. If you are installing Windows XP, you should go directly to the MSE site and download and install that. After installing that go to, http://www.windowsupdate.com/ and that will give you the link to the updates you need. As a note, you may have to visit that site multiple times to make sure all the updates are installed.
You can directly visit those sites with your new computer even without an anti-virus. However it is understandable that you want to be cautious. So on the second computer the MSE site and download the correct installation file. Save that onto a flash drive or burn it to a CD. Then on the new computer, install MSE and then that computer will be protected. The link for an XP install can be find on the MSE site. [direct link to installer]
