Hope it's okay to just copy my original post from the "Am I infected?..." forum.----

Hi! I am having a redirect problem. Every time I search using Google (haven't tried other ones) and click on a link, it redirects me to a site other than the one I clicked on. I have followed several suggestions that I found online but none have helped the problem. At one point after trying several things, I couldn’t connect to the internet at all, I couldn’t do a restore and I couldn’t turn my firewall on and keep getting some error after every restart. After searching online (with hubby’s computer) it seemed that downloading or reinstalling (sorry if my terms are not correct) the winsock might help and it did. I’m back online now but still having the redirect problem. Then I found your website and am hoping someone here can help.

I’ve ran Hitman Pro 3.5.7 which detected some cookies that it deleted and also “401Comupd.exe”
C:\windows\system32\
which it labeled as “suspicious” and didn’t delete.

I’ve also ran----- Malwarebytes and I don’t recall if it found anything the first time but the last 2 times I ran it, it found nothing------ Ad-aware which detected a high level security threat and removed it-----Spybot detected nothing----Avira antivirus found 4 things that were quarantined ----and TDSSkiller (renamed) which found nothing.

I’m running Avira antivirus and Zonealarm and have Windows XP Home edition Version 2002, SP3.

Not sure what other info might be helpful. Please let me know and be as detailed as possible....as you can probably tell from my post, I’m not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to these types of issues with computers …… but I can follow directions.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.---

here are the copies of the logs that were requested...

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I tried to follow all instructions to turn off firewall, antivirus, and malware programs. When I go to security center, it shows that CA antivirus is running. While trying to uninstall this program months ago, it froze up on me and caused all kinds of problems because it didn't completely uninstall. I searched online for a solution and followed several different things to try and thought I had gotten rid of all of it but apparently there is still part of it left somewhere since it’s showing as an active antivirus in the Security Center. Not sure how to handle this.

I tried to run the combofix anyway and received this error:

Then after clicking on the “OK” about eight times (it kept popping up), I got this message:

At this point, I think I downloaded the Combofix from one of your other links and tried to run it again and got these messages.

(Hmmmm...I tried to post the screen shots of the error messages I received but they didn't show up here. Do I need to do something different to make them show up or do I just need to type in what they said?)

I tried to restart the computer thinking it might work after a restart. It downloaded my windows updates before restarting. Not sure if this would cause a problem with running Combofix. Also, upon restart, a lot of the things I had disabled had restarted so I tried to disable them again.

My questions are, should I go ahead and try to run the Combofix now? What do I do about the antivirus program CA, that shows as running. (it’s not in my “add remove programs” list anymore). And in the instructions it says that Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once....how do I keep the programs that I disabled from being enabled after restart...or do I just need to go in and disable each one after each restart?

Sorry to be so complicated.

Again…thanks for your help.

Hello

should I go ahead and try to run the Combofix now?
Yes.

What do I do about the antivirus program CA
I understand that you uninstalled it so I will fix this soon.

how do I keep the programs that I disabled from being enabled after restart
There is only a few programs that will turn themselves back on after a reboot.

I received the same error messages as before when trying to run the combofix. I have added the error messages as an attachment in hopes you can view them since I can't seem to get them to post here. If you can't see them, I will gladly type exactly what they say.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Delete the one you have been using and download a new one from here - http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

ok...got into safe mode and tried to run combofix. It started without the error messages but then I get a warning that says I have 3 real time scannera active: AVG, CA Anti-Virus, and Antivir Desktop. It says to disable these scanners before clicking "OK". I haven't had AVG for a long time and it isn't in my "add/remove programs" list so I can't remove it from there. It does show up when I click Start, Programs but when I tell it to open it won't. It does have an uninstall option there...Should I choose this while in safe mode?

The CA Anti-Virus I can't find anywhere so I'm unable to shut it down.

The AntiVir Desktop...I've went into Avira and stopped it and when I checked it, the AntiVir Guard says "Service stopped". Is there something else I need to do to stop the AntiVir Desktop from running?

After starting Combofix I did get a message that I was not connected to the internet and to check my connection and click ok. It looked like everything was okay and I couldn't find a reason that it would not be connected so I clicked OK. (Are you able to get online in Safe mode?) Then I received the message: Failed to download required files. Aborting... Shall continue scanning for Malware (I think it said malware...the message disappeared before I had it written down). It finished the scan and gave the log. It did not restart the computer. I am still in safe mode (am on a different coputer now). What should I do next?

And yes, AVG, and CA were supposed to be uninstalled unless I did something wrong.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

SecCenter::
AV: AVG *On-access scanning enabled* (Outdated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}
AV: CA Anti-Virus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17CFD1EA-56CF-40B5-A06B-BD3A27397C93}

File::
c:\documents and settings\Owner\khwvbaznah.tmp
c:\windows\system32\dfrgres32.exe

Driver::
Dot3svc32
WinSvchostManager32

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Do I stay in safe mode to do this or restart and then do it?

Hello

If it will run in normal mode then run it - shut down your antivirus

If not then in safe mode

I received the same errors I was getting before when trying to run Combofix in normal mode so I had to run it in safe mode. Received a message that said AVG and CA were realtime scanners that were active. I clicked OK to scan anyway. I was asked to install or update the Recovery Console and I said OK but it was not installed because it couldn't get online in safe mode.

I did a couple google searches and clicked on several sites and was able to get to the correct site just fine.

Do I need to worry about the errors I was getting while trying to run Combofix in normal mode? Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!!
