I'm posting this from my laptop which not infected, I've used this forum twice before and I know you guys are awesome and I'm familiar with the procedures. Whatever scans/programs I'm required to run I will be transferring from a flash drive and running in Safe Mode (Don't forget this when helping me! :) ) on my HP Windows Vista Machine.

I first noticed the infection when my internet had been disabled. I ran a Malware Bytes scan, AVG scan, and I think even Avast. All of them seemed to find bugs and deleted them, and I thought i had caught it. Unfortunately over the next few days things got worse, and eventually I couldnt run scans anymore. My internet was down, my desktop background was blank, my taskbar/window theme was some ugly windows 95 looking mess. I knew something was wrong and I restarted and ran safe mode. While in safe mode, I am finding everything has been disabled on my computer. System restore, Windows Security Center, Windows Network utilities, Services.msc, none of it will let me do anything. I am no expert on combating viruses and everything I've considered trying has failed.

Scared of having my computer bricked, I havent ran it outside of safe mode since. therefore, I had to run DDS and GMER scans in safe mode and I hope this does not affect the accuracy of the scans. DDS ran fine and I will attach the logs, but GMER would not run. My first attempt to run GMER resulted in my computer freezing from overload, the second run started off smoothly but out of nowhere my computer crashed to a blue screen 30 seconds in to the scan. I have attached just the initial scan from GMER, not the completed Ark.txt

I hope that the results of the GMER scan are not critical to the finding of a solution, but if it is I'm going to need help running it properly.

DDS.txt (Ran in safe mode, does that matter?) :

I will be transferring from a flash drive and running in Safe Mode

Please don't run tools in safe mode unless I ask you to. The DDS log shows only processes able to run on the system and this is dramatically different in Safe Mode.

Can you please run TDSSKiller on the machine

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

With no heavy rootkit activity but quite a damaged system we are going to run OTL. This needs to be in normal mode. This will give me an idea of what has taken over your system.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

I'm not seeing a complete disablement of the PC but this should remove what is visible.

Open OTL

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:OTL
IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyOverride" = *.local
IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = http=127.0.0.1:50370
O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - No CLSID value found.
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found
:reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command]
""=""%1" %*"

Then click the Run Fix button at the top

Let the program run unhindered.

When done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now please run MBAM

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If MBAM won't update then download and update MBAM on a clean computer then save the rules.ref folder to a memory stick. This file is found here: 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' then transfer it across to the infected computer.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

This looks okay and I think I feel happy attempting a stronger tool here.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

If the program requests for you to update Combofix then click Yes.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Now run the online scanner from ESET

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Leave the top box checked and then check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

However, I was unable to get on the internet to run the ESET scan. Its not that I don't have a connection, my routers working fine, its that if I even try to open an internet browser i get a swarm of error messages. Something about registry errors and that the "internet is not found"
I still seem to be completely unable to use the majority of windows utilities. Windows firewall wont turn on, i cant even change simple appearance settings.

Can you give me more specific error messages.

In the meantime please run Superantispyware - pretty good at removing malicious registry entries

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

SUPERAntiSpyware is scanning now. Meanwhile, I've prepared a sampling of sorts of error messages I encounter.

As soon as I log in, i get this
Posted Image
Upon clicking on it, I can see basically every service on my computer disabled, including network connections
If I try to enable them, i get this
Posted Image
another bleep in the taskbar tells me my computer is not safe and my security settings arent optimal, heres when I click that one, and attempt to turn on firewall
Posted Image
Following the link that says turn on firewall manually, I encounter this guy

The previous error message mentioned about internet not found no longer seems to be there, so I guess thats a good sign. I can now open up the browser fine, but all the services necessary for internet are disabled.

Next post will include the SUPER log.
