Hello. Today my computer started showing signs of infection. A program installed itself in my Windows bar that constantly made pop-up ads and dialog boxes appear telling me to protect my computer against malware and viruses, and telling me to buy and install different products. The program also hijacked my browsers, changed settings in them (IE and Firefox) to connect through a proxy server, and would not let me load webpages before it told me that my computer was infected, forcing me to click on various prompts before I could get to my intended destination; at times, clicking on the prompts took me to redirected websites (there was no way to leave most of the prompt boxes -- trying to X out of them had no effect).

So, I ran CCleaner, MBAM, and Super Anti-Spyware. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows Vista. After running the anti-malware programs, my computer seems to be running fine again, but I thought I would post my logs here to be safe. Thanks in advance for any help and advice you may give me. (I have the MBAM and Super Anti-Spyware logs, and can post them if they will be of use.)

Hello Gringo. Thanks very much for taking on my case. I should have said in my first post that the anti-malware programs I ran uncovered about 550 problems, most of them tracking cookies and 4 or 5 Trojan viruses. When I cleared these out, the visible problems went away. Still, I'd like to be sure that there isn't anything hidden left over.

Here's the log from the Rootkit scanner you asked me to run:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370

FireFox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Stephen\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\4dkjoijz.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 50370

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hello Gringo. I dragged your notepad script into ComboFix. It ran again and created a new log, but a significant problem has occurred . . .

After running ComboFix this time, I am unable to open files, regardless of their type (notepad, Word, PDF's . . . ). When I try, a dialog box opens that says:

Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.

The same thing happens when I try to open a web browser. I can open browsers by right-clicking on them and choosing "Run as administrator," but this option does not appear when I right-click on Word, Notepad, and other file-types.

So, I can't post the latest ComboFix log, as it is saved on my desktop in a notepad file that I am unable to open. Please help. It seems I have for the time being lost access to all of the files saved on my computer.

Following up on my previous note concerning my inability now to access files on my computer:

I am able to attach files saved on my computer as attachments to e-mail messages, and after I sent them to myself, I am able to download them and open them. I still cannot open a file simply by clicking on it. The dialog box I mentioned in my previous message appears when I try.

In any event, I sent myself my most recent ComboFix log. Here it is (only after this ran was I unable to open my computer's files in the usual way; everything is now marked as belonging to a registry scheduled for deletion):

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop« Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop« Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Thanks, Gringo. I restarted the computer and everything is fine now.

My most recent MBAM log is below (the scan found no infected items, and I did not see a "Show Results" option that would have allowed me to remove anything), followed by the HijackThis log.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StartCCC] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLIStart.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HSON] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\TBS\HSON.exe
