Hi there. you have successfully solved previous infections. I run Windows XP SP1 (not SP2 as when I have tried to install it, it causes terminal unsolvable problems....)

I have spybot (run succesfully before this log) Spyware blaster, and Adaware, which at the moment is BLOCKING and will not finish...

Firefox has just lately opened very slowly... the whole computer runs more slowly than normal. I did recently install, THEN uninstall RealPlayer... Here is the log, MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

OK HERE GOES! Many thanks, and good luck!

For info: the computer still runs very slowly, esp for opening up new programmes... EG, when I closed down in order to start in safe mode, it takes 3/4 times longer than usual.... wheras closing down FROM safe mode was normal speed...

THANKS AGAIN!

Dont see anything there..lets try this:

Download Silentrunners.zip from:

http://www.silentrunners.org/

Run the SilentRunners.vbs file. If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. It might say something like "Malicious Script Warning". This script is not malicious so you are safe in allowing it to run. When it asks if you would like to run all the tests, allow it to do so.

When it has finished it will produce a Startup Programs text file. Copy and paste that text file here in your next reply.

Nope..that seemed to be the contents of the silentrunners.vbs file rather than the output of the program. When you doubleclick on that file, it gave you the contents you posted before?

OOPS! Probably middle of night as I reply now... I await the next installment...

Here is my latest effort, I hope this is what was needed - seemed to correspond better to your instructions!

Again, many thanks...

I still do not see anything at all running here that would be causing a problem. You may want to clean out your temp files and see if that helps. Other things may be to check the programs starting automatically and see if they are necessary to run automatically, or if instead, you can start them as needed. That may speed some things up a bit.

Try this:

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

OK. I did all that. For clarification, I run Firefox, and have cleared those temp files as well... In fact, the launches seem to be very slow - ie things like new programmes or windows are sometimes very slow to appear. I did try System restore, one created a bit of havoc, I went further back ...

Here is a current log again, and if there is nothing there, then thanks for your help and I'll just have to keep trying!

THANKS AGAIN!

I just dont see anything..lets try one last thing.

To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  • Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  • Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  • Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  • The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  • Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)]

Hi again. I tried this, BUT:
Rootkit Revealer blocked twice, the second time after about 3 hrs...

THis is all that was showing by then...

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG\Seed (Timestamp: 29\11\05 10:57)
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\Application\SamplApp\EventMessageFile (Timestamp: 13\05\05)
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\Eventlog\Application\SamplApp\EventMessageFile (Timestamp: 13\05\05)

NB SYMPTOMS AS OF NOW:
Firefox, which always ran fine, takes about 30 SECS to open...
(I tried various fixes offered in their forum - new profile, delete prefetch for that... to no avail).

Other launches also take a lot longer than normal - not ALL progs (eg not Outlook...) but all INSTALLERS, and others... As if the memory is over used or badly sorted. I'm also having FAR MORE CRASHES than normal (Hard disk problem???)

I run Windows XP with 205 Mo RAM. Typically, in Task manager, Firefox currently uses around 25 Mo which doesn't seem excessive...

I have Codestuff Starter installed - is there anything I can try there?

THANKS AGAIN for any help!!!
Yours, david.

I am not sure what codestuff starter is. I just dont see anything wrong here. No logs from any of the programs we are running show any bad software. At this point it could be anything, fragmented hard drives, memory going bad, not enough memory, etc.

Thanks again for efforts. Do you know any solution for "memory going bad"??

I will also look elsewhere for any info. Thanks again, david.
