Orange Blossom (OB),

Thanks much for your response. Basic problem is the standard Google redirect behavior that others have reported. Do a search, click the link, get redirected to some other search engine/adware site. Happens with both IE and Firefox. Problem began about a week and a half ago, when I stupidly responded to a popup saying that Firefox needed an update, and actually downloaded and ran an unsigned exe. Totally my bad, and this puppy has proved very difficult to eradicate. Initially identified processes, labeled as Borland Silvers, which were actively running, and hogging computer resources, mcg.exe and something else. Removed the offending exe's and prefetch entries manually. McAfee scan found and removed some viruses, including various versions of Vundo. Spyware Terminator basically rendered the machine inoperable with real-time scanning on, although it did claim to catch some redirects, and has been uninstalled. Hitman Pro did very little, has been uninstalled. Hope that both of those are truly gone, and not malware in their own right. Malwarebytes found and removed some adware, along with a bunch of tracking cookies, have the logs if you need them, but now runs clean on a quick scan. StopZilla, which I now own, found and removed a bunch more things, though it took a couple of passes to get everything cleaned out of the recovery directories and e-mail trash. Again, have logs as needed. TDSSKiller found nothing, twice. Downloaded Kapersky, but aborted install, as it wanted to remove McAfee as part of the process. McAfee subscription happens to be running out soon, would be happy to replace them, but didn't like the forced uninstall idea. Have also cleaned up temp directories and unneeded software, including removing Java for the moment. No changes, except that the computer does run faster now.

Bottom line is that after a lot of scanning, removing, and general cleanup, the problem persists. Any and all assistance would be appreciated, and happy to contribute to the larger effort as appropriate. Have done my best to follow instructions in posting - please let me know if there are other things I need to do to help solve these problems for myself and others.

Mark

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Sorry for the delay, I thought I had it set up to notify me by e-mail when you replied. In any case, did the following:

1. Disabled StopZilla, McAfee
2. Ran ComboFix
3. Disconnect from Internet after Recovery Console download
4. ComboFix ran, saved log.
5. Strange CD access (no other programs running)
6. Re-enabled StopZilla, McAfee
7. StopZilla detected and blocked two items: CatchMe, and System Policies Registry Tools. Did not remove, pending further direction from you.
8. Removed CD from drive
9. Reconnected to Internet
10. Firefox not default browser, restored that.
11. Cleared cache and search history
12. Seven Google searches, no redirects yet. In the past, that has been enough for the problem to resurface.

Here's the ComboFix log:

ComboFix 10-10-25.01 - Mark Philbrick 10/25/2010 21:04:23.1.1 - x86

Thanks for your help so far, please let me know what to do next. In particular, what software should I be using for virus and spyware protection going forward?

Greetings

what software should I be using for virus and spyware protection going forward?
I will give you some ideas when we finish - but for now are you happy with Mcafee and do you want to change?

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\msiexeck.dll

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>;*.local

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

[b]"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo,

Ok, here's what I did:

1. Close all running programs
2. Disconnect machine from network (unplugged Ethernet cable)
3. Disabled McAfee, StopZilla
4. Dragged cfscript to ComboFix icon.
5. Waited, saved log to file when done.
5.a No weird CD activity this time, but drive is now empty.
6. Restarted StopZilla. It reported 26 infections, 24 of which were from Catch Me, two from system policies something or other. Did not Remove Now, chose Remove Later.
7. Restarted McAfee.
8. Reconnected computer to network.
9. Reset FireFox as default browser.
10. Several random Google searches, clicked on links, no redirects yet.
11. Restarted e-mail (Thunderbird)
12. Logged on here, and started posting.

Here is the CF log:

Hello

It reported 26 infections - these are from combofix

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Adobe Acrobat

I see that you are using Adobe Acrobat which if fine for editing pdf files but because today’s viruses are using vulnerabilities in older versions of Adobe and because it is easier to update I suggest that you use the free Adobe reader or Foxit reader to view all PDF files

you don't need to uninstall Acrobat, but do use one of these free readers

You can download it from here Adobe free reader
uncheck any of the extra stuff that they offer

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing Foxit PDF Reader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

read carefully I am not asking you to uninstall acrobat but what I am asking is to download one of the free readers for when you are reading PDF files - keep acrobat for when you need to edit or dreat pdf files

Gringo,

Hear you about PDF readers vs. Acrobat Pro. Apologize for not reading carefully. Let's defer that conversation, starting on the rest of your instructions now.

Gringo,

I salute your patience. These things are insidious. This round of behaviors:

0. Printed your instructions
1. Closed all programs
2. Disconnected from network (physical removal of FE cable from relevant port)
3. Disabled McAfee and StopZilla
4. Ran TPC
required reboot
did nothing afterwards
5. Ran MBAM
Reconnected to allow updates
Disconnected again thereafter
6. Ran HijackThis
Installation needed some help
7. Re-enabled StopZilla, McAfee
8. Reconnected to network
9. Came here to post

Rerun MBAM and make sure to remove these quick scan is ok

You can keep this computer connected now no need to disconnect

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AHQInit] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Program\AHQInit.exe
