Does someone have time to help me out tonight for a quick rootkit removal?

I would appreciate it -

Thanks.

Merged posts. ~ OB

PS - GMER crashes before it can complete.

Including some more scans -

This computer restarts like crazy all the time. If this is not a rootkit, the RAM is bad...

EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Not trying to bump - Only adding additional info.

Thorough scandisk was performed, as well as default ramtest86 (one pass) - no errors. So "STOP" / EVENT ID 1000 likely not due to hardware problems. All drivers checked (all latest - MB/chipset, display, sound, mouse - no bios update available for this box).

At this point, just waiting to see what you would like for me to do next.

Thanks :)

I'm here -

Wow, you guys are busy... I had almost made the decision to back up all the useful data and re-install from scratch.

Here's the latest: If I attempt to run the Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool, it systematically restarts the box about half way through.

Nice to meet you m0le -

OK, will do. I'm not in front of the box right now, but rather at home - I'll RDP to it to perform the work stated above. Hopefully I don't lose the box in the process. First I'll double-check it is set to restarts automatically after BsOD - just in case.

FYI - I'm using RealVNC to Remote right now. I always make sure to have both RDP and VNC ready in case I lose one of them.

Hmm - I didn't see this before, but I don't like those drivers without signatures:

dump_atapi.sys
dump_WMILIB.SYS

Thoughts?

They are both legit. Dump_atapi.sys is part of atapi.sys. When that first coming up quite a lot of us were questioning it.

My thoughts are that this is looking clean.

Please run SAS and ESET to look for traces

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

And

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan

OK I started to run the SIS - It ran for 15 minutes fine, found 298 adware cookies, but has been "stuck" ever since, showing that it is scanning one cookie in particular - yet not making "progress" since. It's now 40 minutes and it looks as though it's still scanning this same cookie even since the last 20 minutes... The clock is still going up (showing how long it's been since it started, so I know it's "doing" something - But I couldn't tell you what exactly it's doing.

How much longer should I wait under these circumstances?

If it hasn't found anything except tracking cookies then stop the scan. If it has found other items then list them and post them and then stop the scan.

Run ATF to clear out the PC's temp/cookies/cache

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

NB: If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

This could also be Clear Recent History or similar

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Then run ESET :thumbup2:

Nothing was listed other than cookies.

But the SIS scanning would not stop. I would click "cancel", it would say "sure you want to abort?" - I would say "yes", and then the prompt would disappear but the scan continued to do "nothing" while the clock kept on climbing.

Task Manager / terminating process allowed me to kill it.

Ran ATF - Deleted everything. Now running ESET. (Had to install the ActiveX)
