This computer was used for years in an office environment by 1 or more people before coming to my home, so it has LOTS of programs and files on it I never use. All I use on this computer is Mozilla, IE, and Microsoft Word and Excel. In a few years at my home itagradually become slower to the point of uselessness; for example after cliking on the Start button, it took 30 seconds before you could see the Start button depress, and 2-3 minutes for the Start menu to open. In the last month I have done an extensive tune-up including the following steps:

I ran disk cleanup, empty recycle bin, empty all temp folders. I ran AVG & MalwareBytes & SpywareBlaster & Trend Micro
Housecall & Eset Online Scan; and removed everything they suggested. I disabled all but a few startups, removed un-needed
programs, ran scandisk & defragment, disabled un-needed services, updated Windows, set system "adjusted for best performance". I also physically cleaned the interior of the computer.

I then removed AVG, MalwareBytes, and SpywareBlaster; and installed McAfee Total Protection. I ran McAfee
Virtual Technician, then ran McAfee scan and removed everything suggested, except the "CoolWebSearch" adware which Mcafee was unable to remove.

At this point this computer runs much better, at least 10 times faster than before the tune-up, and comparable in speed to my other computers. However, I am concerned about the CoolWebSearch infection McAfee found. Is this an issue that needs to be dealt with? If so please help.

Gringo:
After my original post, and before your first post, I ran CWShredder, which found nothing. Then I ran McAfee again with the same result, that is it found Coolwebsearch but could not remove it.

Since then the computer has slowed down some and I have been having a few problems like browser closing on it's own, and desktop temporarily losing all icons including the bottom bar where the START button is.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I just realized the time change gave me an xtra hour. Here is the Combofix log.
Computer was about the same before I ran the Combofix. Should I now use it for a while to see if Combofix helped?

Gringo:
I turned off McAfee before running Combofix. After Combofix I turned McAfee back on. I would like to leave it on so my daughter can use the computer to get on the web. She uses only a limited account on this computer. Is this ok, or should I keep her off this computer until you are done helping us? When I run your current list of tasks, should McAfee be on or off?
Thanks

Gringo:
Here are the 2 logs you asked for in your last post. Both were run with McAfee on.

When I ran Malwarebytes, I saw no option to follow three lines of your instructions: from "When the scan is..." to "...on Remove Selected".

Thanks
