I get the following message when I try to play a video in Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there might be a problem with your sound or video device. Try installing an updated device driver.

Ive since gotten new video cards, new drivers, on three separate occasions and it's never worked. I gave up on it over a year ago and got something else, but came here and saw that there was other discussion on Windows Media Player and hoped maybe someone could figure out why i'm getting this stupid message.

Download VLC, don't use Windows Media Player. Because of this were you never able to watch anything?

I really can't figure out much, but check msconfig and go into services. Look for anything suspicious that's unchecked.
