Ran Combofix after Malwarebytes, ESET online scan, and smitfraudfix could not get rid of all symptoms. I ran Combofix myself because of the reviews of it being automatic and figured what could it hurt. But now my PC has unstable erradic behavior. It restarts at the windows splash screen sometimes. But if I hold the power button in it gets to my desktop. It will seem normal until I open a program like Powerpoint and then it freezes.

Original Symptoms included:
  • Pop-ups
  • Windows update link will not work
  • Google redirects
  • Taskbar changed from blue to gray
AVG tried to remove some but said it was inaccessable.
MBAM removed some.
  • Now getting Error report: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close."
  • Now Sound stops working after a little while too.
The last thing I did was to run Combofix for the first time;
Combofix looks like it deleted files just before computer restart loops and crashes. Here is the log:

What should I do?
THANK YOU for your help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Yes it has been a while but thank you for taking the request. It took me a while anyways because I had to replace a bad memory module when the computer would not make it to POST anymore. Windows is still unstable. It worked fine the last two days and now it wont load safe mode all the way through. So I will try to get it back to run your instructions.

When it was working, I still was getting random redirects to websites wether I was using Firefox or IE. For example, it may let me do the first search with no problems, but when I click on a link in a website or do another search it will sometimes redirect to a unrelated page such as "going-to-n.com". At least Firefox stopped me from going there with the reported attack page warning. So I am still infected somehow. Not even a full rootkit scan with AVG fixed it!

BTW, I've never heard of software (i.e. combofix) being able to cause a Mem chip to fail, but would like your confirmation on that.

Thank You

combofix definitely had nothing to do with that failure. I see signs of a backdoor rootkit in your logs:
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. Since it is no longer booting, it may be the best option to just do a new install.

Thanks,I agree. Yeah unfortunately I bought something online. I'm going to try to backup all my files tomorrow and reformat.
At first I thought the deleted files in combo log were bad but I think all those deleted files belonged to smit fraud fix program.
Could you tell which rootkit name it is so I can find out if that one was likely stealing CC info?

yes the files deleted by ComboFix were part of SmitFraudfix.

The infection is called TDL3 or TDL4. From the logs so far, I can't tell which version it will be. Some info can be found here: http://www.prevx.com/blog/139/Tdss-rootkit-silently-owns-the-net.html A very extensive analysis can be found here: www.eset.com/resources/white-papers/TDL3-Analysis.pdf
