My Previous Post

I was having a problem on my computer, came here and another forum for help. I didn't get a lot of responses here, but on the other forum someone worked with me and I found out I had a rootkit. Basically, what happened was my CPU became really "buggy." I couldn't access programs (most notably malware and spyware removal programs) and my browser was acting up especially when I was Google searching (no re-directs I don't think). Then all of a sudden my sound completely disappeared. That's when I came to the forum for help.

I've managed, I believe, to fix the rootkit problem. All my programs are accessible and my browser is working fine. Unfortunately, my sound is still gone. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure my sound card is listed in the Device Manager, and it and everything else there in Sound and Audio Devices is listed as working properly. I have tried all the elementary stuff (checking speakers, wires, plugging headphones directly into the CPU, etc.) and it is definitely not my speakers or anything like that.

I came back here to post an update and was directed to start a new topic. I started at step 6 and worked all the way up until step 8. The GMER scan DOES NOT WORK for me. In fact it reset my computer "scarily" twice. Windows gave me this message after both restarts "Stop (blue screen) error caused by a device or driver." I don't plan on running it again and I did a chkdsk just to be safe. The first time I clicked on it, it ran automatically before I could deselect IAT/EAT so I let it run. Then I deselected IAT/EAT and attempted to let it run but it froze almost immediately and then my CPU restarted. The second time I tried, again it scanned automatically when I clicked on it, then I deselected IAT/EAT and hit the scan button again. This time it started scanning, but took so long I ended up going to bed and I when I got up, my CPU had restarted and gave me the same message as the first time. I didn't have any issues with the other scans.

UPDATE:

My sound is back. I'm not quite sure how. The only new thing I did was uninstall and then reinstall the driver to my sound card. I didn't think that worked though because the volume icon never re-appeared in the system tray (it's been gone since this whole thing started). I have no idea how to make it come back or what caused the "blue screen" errors so I'd still appreciate any help/advice and if I need to remove any of the scanners I downloaded and ran. Thanks so much in advance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.
