Hi,

For some days now I have been having an issue with google search redirecting certain searches to other websites unrelated to the links presented in the search results.

For example, I just searched for "Snow and rock" (an outdoor sports store in the UK) in google.com and clicked on one of its links, but the browser took me to this link:

hxxp://jobsearch.monster.co.uk/Agriculture-Forestry-Fishing/get-jobs-3.aspx?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_n=looksmart

It does not always go to the same link.

This may have started when my windows update stopped working, apparently back in August. I fixed this a couple of weeks ago but this problem remains.

I run the following as standard:
- windows firewall
- AVG free

I have recently added, run and actioned the safe to action results on:
- spyware doctor
- malware bytes
- wise registry cleaner

Despite the above reporting clean results, the issue continues.

Prior to creating this post I was following your "prep guide" and had completed all the steps down to step 7, but could not complete step 8 on GMER. I have run gmer.exe at least 4 times and while it starts and runs ok and generates hundreds of rows of results, every time I leave it to complete I return to find that it has crashed my PC i.e. i have a blank windows background screen with no tool-bar, a black screen (in both cases cursor still on screen but nothing to click and ctrl-alt-del does not start task manager) or the PC has re-booted on its own. I have not seen any error messages, and I was following your advice to uncheck the IAT/EAT box.

I am running windows vista home premium.

Any help with resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

Following this initial post at 16:10 BST on 18-Oct, I may not be able to get back to my PC until this evening or tomorrow.

These are the GMER results from the quick scan:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    explorer.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

myrti,

i'm somewhat surprised to hear that but i will take your word for it.

what should i do with my personal files, photographs, etc on this machine? am i safe to copy these across to a new machine or will the trojan be hidden among these files? if so, can i remove it somehow, as i cannot lose all of my personal files.

i think i will just buy a copy of windows 7 and so a clean install as this machine has become quite slow in any case. would appreciate your advice on whether i can copy-across personal files to a USB drive etc.

thanks
steve

Hi,

the google redirects are due to an infection called TDL3, you can read a little about it success here: http://www.prevx.com/blog/139/Tdss-rootkit-silently-owns-the-net.html

The infection is very advanced and very common currently.

You can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, and .html) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executable files inside them as some types of malware can penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files too. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of file(s) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.

If you are backing up to your flash drive, make sure that you vaccinate it against infections:

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

myrti,

thanks for this information. i will work on this when i get the time.

a final question, if you don't mind. i would be very grateful if you could please provide me a list of your recommended anti-virus, firewall, registry protection etc software which i should install once i have a clean install. i feel i have bene running a mismash of things and would like an expert view on what would be a good, strong combination.

also, after reading the article on this rootkit, it seems switching-on UAC may have helped me. would you recommend this?

finally, is windows 7 significantly more secure than vista? if so, any particular version? i could re-install my original vista HP, or if you think it would work better i can get Win7.

to close, how much time have you spent on my case and what do you think would be a reasonable payment? i appreciate your support and would like to give something, though i am not sure what and don't want to get it wrong.

thanks
steve

Hi Steve,

first of all, let me say this is a hobby for me. I do this for free, because I enjoy helping and fighting malware. I do it because I believe BleepingComputer is a great place to spend my time. Hence I do not need any payment.
I am thankful for every donation of course, but I would still be here helping if I wouldn't get any donation. Any amount you decide on is welcome, there is no right or wrong. :)

In regards to security programs, we usually suggest free programs, not because the paid ones are bad, but because it is more likely that one will install a free program than go out and buy a non free one. You can in general not say that a paid one will keep you safer than a free one or vice versa. There are both good and not so good ones in the paid and free sector.

Two free anti virus programs I often suggest are Avira and Microsoft Security Essentials. Those are "pure" anti virus programs, they do not, for example, include a firewall. With Vista and up you have a good two way firewall included into the operating system and there is not strictly a need for a software firewall. If you wish for one though, you can find a list of good free and non free firewalls here: Link

Personally I don't think that switching operating system will make you much more secure. Lots of the modifications made with Vista have been improved in Windows 7, but the big step security wise was between XP and Vista, not between Vista and Windows7

In addition I frequently suggest the following steps to render a PC more secure:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.

myrti,

thanks. i will work through that list.

i have reinstalled vista home premium.

i thought it would reformat my hdd but it didn't, it just parked the old windows in a new directory, which i have deleted.

what's the best way to make sure this rootkit is not longer on my machine? my google searches do not seem to be redirecting, though i'm not sure whether that was related or not.

have made a paypal payment; thanks again for your assistance.

cheers
steve

Hi,

if you are not getting redirected then you do not have the rootkit anymore.

If you want to be safe, you can run another rootkit unhooker scan and I'll check the log out. :)
