I'm pretty sure I can fix this problem myself. I've already identified the smss.exe files as bad startups. But the svchost.exe ones always confuse me. Do some, all, or none of those in the startup list belong? Is the svchost.exe file even supposed to be in the system32 directory?

I would really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

Hello bearsfan and welcome to BleepingComputer.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

From WinTasks Process Library:
"smss.exe is a process which is a part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is called the Session Manager SubSystem and is responsible for handling sessions on your system. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated."

C:\WINDOWS\System32 is the proper folder for this file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe

From WinTasks Process Library:
"lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanisms. It specifically deals with local security and login policies. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated."

C:\WINDOWS\System32 is the proper folder for this file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

From WinTasks Process Library:
"svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated."

C:\WINDOWS\System32 is the proper folder for this file.

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may interfere with some of our HijackThis fixes:

Right click the SpywareGuard icon in the System Tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen and open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit. Confirm the program is closed.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Start Page] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnt32.exe home

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders (Don't be concerned if they can not be found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnt32.exe <--File

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log. How are things running? Any particular symptoms you are trying to address?
