I have found useful information and help on this site before, so I decided to become a member. I am trying to help my son with his computer it is a Dell Dimension 4600i. He had left it powered on for a couple of days and when he tried to bring it out of sleep mode he encountered Diskette drive 0 seek failure. he also says it does not find the hard drive. He has changed the cmos battery and tried to start up but still has the same problem. all cables have been checked for good connection. Any suggestions where to go from here?

Have you gone to the Device Manager ?

Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Systems > Hardware > Device Manager

When you don't have to worry about your computer anymore, you can start

How far does the boot process get...before an error message appears?

What is the exact wording of said message, please?

I would

a. Check the boot order in the BIOS, ensuring that the hard drive is reflected as the first option...and is properly reflected on the main BIOS screen.

b. Download and run...the long diagnostic test for the hard drive...available at the website of the hard drive manufacturer.

Since this is a Dell system, you could run the Dell Diagnostics.
